Love this film!

I'm so glad i stayed in this Fri night and watched this movie! I saw it years ago and made a point to remember the movie title and look out for it again. Of course this is not always easy with life being so busy. So, cool beans, my memory was jogged when it was on tv tonight. This movie is not only thoroughly entertaining, but also such a clever portrayal of British life. I loved every character and even the zeppelin!

the movie was ok. nothing too special really. i mean im sure boorman had a fun time making this movie, bringing back some childhood memories or what not, but as far as im concerned, it could of been better, more fast paced. it boring at some points, well many points, but at other times it was funny and poignant. i didnt really get the ending tough. why were they all cheering like mad kids?

reply

They were cheering because a stray bomb had destroyed the kid's school, burning it down, on the first day of school back from summer holiday - thus giving them 'stolen time' off from school to lengthen their summer break. The grandfather thought this was the most hilarious thing he'd seen in a while and well, quite obviously the kids were ecstatic. There are few moments more pleasurable than unexpected moments of leisure.

No disrespect, but you're either too young to appreciate the film, or you weren't paying attention. It's an extremely sophisticated movie. And there are no wasted scenes. (If you want a film that moves at the pace of Bond, watch Bond.) It's a dramatic comedy, and one of the most brilliant of the past two decades. This film is accessible to any filmgoer, if you seriously embrace it. Finally, there's nothing subtle about kids -- suffering under a tyrannical principal and a contempuous teacher --cheering like mad when their school is bombed.

I love this film simply for the scene where Grandfather (Ian Bannen) shoots the rat in the vegetable patch with a 12 bore....

Quite hilarious!

I saw this film fifteen years ago and loved it ever since. Its look at life through the eyes of a child is priceless. I particularly enjoyed the characters' capability of accepting each other and life, and find happiness however difficult the things coming their way were. The kid was absolutely great, but my favorite character was the grumpy, unconventional grandfather: brilliant. The last scene with him driving the kid back home and belly-laughing at what happened to the school put a smile in my heart - an old man still capable of looking at the world through the eyes of a child...

This is one of my all time favourite movies. I'm so glad I decided to not rent a movie tonight and instead found it on TCM. I've seen it about a dozen times over the years and each time it just gets better and better. To the previous post who found it boring...maybe try watching it again and just go with the story...it's fabulous!

I too loved every aspect of this delightful film, set amidst one of the worst events in History doesn't stop life from happening especially for a wide eyed optimistic nine year old. I guess that's the whole point. Seeing this through his eyes. The talent assembled for this piece is stellar, especially for Sarah Miles. She is such a beautifully bittersweet actress she can have me laughing one minute and crying the next.

love, love, love this movie!!!! Saw it in 1987 and has been my fave ever since. The end scene, "it was a stray bomb. Thank you, Adolf!" needs to go down in movie history.

In 1971 a teacher left a presser cooked on overnight in our school and it set fife to the 1st floor chemistry and Physics labs.

I was one of first kids to arrive and most of the kids who turned up acted exactly like those in the movie.

Watchig the reactions of the teachers was best of all.

Unfortunately we only had 2 stolen days before the rest of the svhool was declared safe.
