Significance of 9?

Can someone explain this to me? Maybe it's a lucky number in China, or connected with an historical event? What do you know? Also, who was that guy Sampao meant to be? Was he a local gang leader or something? Why wouldn't the butcher flay him? He seemed like such an *beep*

I know you are, you said you are, but what am I?

In Mandarin Chinese the word for the number nine is a homophone to the word for alcohol/wine. "Jiu" with a tone that falls and then rises. The name is basic word play.

She was used to people calling her 'Nine' because she was the ninth child in her family, born on the 9th day of September. She insisted her workers to call her by her nickname because she wanted them to treat her on equal terms, as she was also from a very poor family and didn't feel comfortable as their 'boss'. Sanpao was indeed some kind of local villain; the guy who was chosen to skin him alive was one of his men. He couldn't kill his own master.

i dont think its about the fact that it was his master or not. I think it was due to the fact he didnt want to Skin a life person.I got that impression. it wouldnt of mattered who it was he would of objected. Powerful film
