how old was max ?

i want to know how old was max because that chractor seemed to be too old to date a high school girl i mean come on it seemed to me that he was an adult stock brooker

reply

I always assumed Max to be around 25. Ryan was 18 and about to graduate, so it was okay.

reply

Max was 29. It isn't a stretch: when I was 29 I looked about 16.

reply

He was either 28 or 29. Close enough to say "I'm almost 30" at one point.

My question is...how old is Patrick? He's only just starting to get his drivers license, which suggests he's about to be or just turned 16, but is in the same grade/classes as Andrew/Max and Ryan, and graduates with that whole crew...did he skip grades, or were the writers reaaaaaaally lazy about his character? I know the first part of the movie is either the very beginning of senior year, or the very end of junior year (most logical times to have elections for senior class officers) but still. I was near the young end of my class (late October birthday), and I turned 16 at the very beginning of junior year.

Just something kind of odd I noticed. Of course, this movie also has a 28-29 year old actually falls in love with a 17-18 year old without someone saying the word "pedophile." Actually, I'm going with 17 since she got "early" admission in to Iowa.

Someone should go teach them how to change the channel.

reply

Maybe Patrick just waited a while to get his liscence. Not everyone gets their lisence straight away.

I was 16 when i started my senior year since my bday was late(in Dec) Years ago the cut off was Dec 31st so he Patrick could easily be 16 when he was a senior.

reply

Also some states you have to be 17 to get your drivers license like here in NJ

reply

Not to mention the fact that Patrick was obviously a terrible driver, perhaps he failed out of drivers ed the first time. My sister was so bad she failed her the driving test like 3 times and didn't end up getting her license until she was 18.

What I think is funny is that when Cryer had the beard he looked anywhere from 24 to 30, without it he looked about 16, and in real life he was about 22.

At the time, starting at age 16, you could get a real/regular license in Iowa which was renewed until you were 21, when the sideways picture was replaced with a frontal face shot and the minor (red) coloring was removed. Most kids lived in rural areas and were driving equipment with a restricted license from age 14. But you couldn't get the license under the age of 18 without taking a test to get your permit, a certificate from a driving class and and good scores on driving and written tests.
At the time, there was no cut-off for kindergarten. When you could pass the skills test, you were in. I could do numbers, letters, songs, and picture writing in English, French and Spanish (yes I was the oldest spawn of over-educated and obsessive people) as well as being potty-trained by aged 4, so I was in.

Patrick most likely had to take the driving class to get the certificate to get the license. If he went into school right at five, he wouldn't have been able to take the class until age 16--his junior year. As he mucked it up, he took it again in the fall and thus it took until he was ready to graduate to get his car.

My senior year in high school, I was 17 (summer birthday). I was also considered in the age of consent sexually (if the older party is 18-21 and the younger party is 16-17, its not automatic statutory rape) and was allowed to group date with a member of the community theater troupe who was 20.

By the time the trial and relocation was done, it was two years after the main part of the movie takes place. By then, Ryan was at least 19 to Andrew's 31, which is a little less creepy than the starting 17 and 29.

Wow, what a bunch of prudes IMDB must be. My post that questioned the term 'Pedophile' being used to describe Max dating a 17-18 year old was deleted by an administrator, probably because someone complained. Again, pedophilia is a sexual attraction to prepubescent boys/girls, not a 10 year age gap between a 17-18 year old and a 27-28 year old. You may call it creepy, and you may not agree with it, but it is not pedophilia.

reply

I thought he was around 30, but I don't think they ever really say.

reply

Andrew was 27 the Max alias was 17

reply

~ Ryan was just 10 years younger than Max. He just would have had to hold out for a year.Luckily they met up in college. They were so sweet together.

I just watched it for the first time in at least 20 years, and while Andrew/Max is talking to Patrick, at 1:10, he says that he's almost 30. So he is either 28-29. It was also shown in the trailer for the movie.

i just remembered this movie. i saw it on cable a couple times over the years. just saw No Small Affair on CW and it reminded me of this movie.

even if she was 18 i don't know if they would make this movie today, especially after all those teacher/student scandals of recent years - though i haven't heard of a major one recently.

reply

I would say that he was 27 to 29 from a clue that they seem to give in the beginning of the movie that no-one has mentioned yet.

In the office, just like many of the schools I attended in my youth, has multiple class pictures of past graduating classes that span back through the decades. Andrew is looking around and his eyes (via the camera) settles on one. 1977. He smiles with a look of nostalgia.

This led me to believe that he graduated in 1977.

Now the movie was released in 1987 and (naturally) doesn't come with a title card reading "A few years ago..." or "A few years from now...", so the events of the film are 'assumed' to be taking place in 1987.

Based on that, give him a graduating age of 17 or 18, depending on birthday or 19 since he's mentioned having bad grades and may have been held back a year, tack on the 10 years between the events of the film and the 1977 graduation date, and voila!

*sigh* I put waaaay too much thought into that math, but I also looked up the actors' real ages - IRL, he's only 6 years older than her so those of you experiencing squick at the thought of someone dating someone 10 years their junior can breathe a little better there. LOL

Max graduated in the class of 1977. This movie was 1987, so he was probably 28 years old. Meanwhile, Patrick and all the high schoolers were probably 17 years old because they graduated 1988.

He says in the movie he's "almost 30," which could mean about anything after probably 27 years of age. Still, he's 10 years or more older than the girl he's in love with.

The sad thing is, I knew girls in high-school who were dating guys who were at least 10 years older than they were. It happened often enough that the school required students to get permission to bring someone to the prom if the person wasn't a student in the school.

One girl was 15 and sophomore. She had kind of a crush on me and her friend asked me why I didn't ask her out. I thought she was too young and I was only 18. She was dating a guy who was 28 or 29 at the same time. Another one was an 18-year-old senior who was dating a guy who was 28. In both cases, both girls talked to me in class and the boyfriends got mad. In one case, the guy came to a sporting event and threatened to beat me up afterward. When I went outside to meet him, he was gone. The other guy came to my house and asked my foster dad to send me outside. My foster dad, who was only four years older than him, asked him if he really wanted to start a fight with a minor.

I do find it a bit creepy that the main character of this movie is nearly 30 and is going after a high-school student.
