Did anyone else think that Kevin was gay? (serious question)

I just finished watching this movie, and the entire time, I seriously thought Kevin was supposed to be gay, but hadn't come out of the closet yet. During the scene where Max is sitting at the lunch table with those two girls, Kevin walks up and blatantly winks at Max. I assumed that Kevin had a crush on Max because he thought that Max was also gay (there was that other scene at the beginning where Max was in the classroom where the teacher was talking about heterosexuals and homosexuals, and then Max accidentally raises his hand and makes it seem like he is indicating that he is a homosexual). So, I thought that Kevin thought Max was gay, and thus was trying to give him subtle hints......Also, there was that other scene where Max and Kevin were talking outside, and then Kevin was concerned about what Ryan had said to Max about him. I believe he said something like "What has she said about me?"

Did anyone else notice and interpret these scenes the same way that I did? I honestly thought that there would be some sort of reveal at the end where Kevin tried to hit on Max.....I guess I just totally misinterpreted his character though!

Interesting but no I didn't think he was gay. It actually never entered my mind.

He didn't seem "gay" just nerdy as hell! Lol! but aren't we all awkward when we were teens?!

Some people read way too much into things.

I thought it was something definitely he didn't want Ryan to tell about him. And it could have been he was gay,but he had a secret that he didn't want anyone else to know that Ryan new and that shows her character that she never said what it was.

Question everything.

You're not crazy. Maybe it is just unfortunate proximity to the homo/hetero classroom scene, but the first time you see Kevin it seems like he is smitten with Max. Then there's at least one, maybe two other times where he seems genuinely thrilled to see Max, though it was mostly because of how they were edited.

As for the scene outside I was wondering if he was going to to try and kiss Max based on all the aforementioned moments.

reply

Exactly! I'm glad I'm not the only one who picked up on these subtleties. I suppose it could have all just been unintentional (as you said, with the way it was edited), and we simply misinterpreted the scenes with Kevin, but it does almost seem like it could have originally been an aspect of the plot that the writers or director decided to scrap at the last minute.

It's a good question but I do not think Kevin was gay. As for the scene where he asks Max what Ryan said about him, I don't think it was in reference to any one thing in particular. Rather, I think he just wanted to know what Ryan's take on their relationship was. It was in a 'high-school/ what did she think of me?' way. He could also have slipped her a note saying do you like me? and asking her to check yes or no... That kind of thing.
