Hellraiser: ranking the movies in order of quality

We've gone through all nine Hellraisers movies to date. The big question - is Hellraiser: Revelations in the top slot?

There’s a lot to get through here, so let’s skim over the preamble and get straight down to business. To date there have been nine Hellraiser movies. Only the first four were released in cinemas. The Hellraiser saga, with its tales of demons, boxes and the promise of unlimited pleasure and pain, has endured for three decades, a longevity that isn’t necessarily a cause for celebration.

This is my attempt to rank the many movies in reverse order of quality. May the pleasure of your reading experience be in direct inverse proportion to the pain, tears and suffering I poured into the creation of this piece of writing.

1. Hellraiser
2. Hellbound: Hellraiser II
3. Hellraiser: Inferno
4. Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth
5. Hellraiser: Bloodline
6. Hellraiser: Hellseeker
7. Hellraiser: Deader
8. Hellraiser: Hellworld
9. Hellraiser: Revelations

I put Inferno over 3 and Bloodline because I think it's overall a better movie than those two(even if it could be argued that it's not a good "Hellraiser" movie), while I put 3 over Bloodline because of Bloodline's disjointed nature. I could easily reverse 3 and Bloodline's ranking because I really prefer the darker more serious direction of Bloodline over 3's campy, MTV-inspired tone.

Hellseeker is the the best of the post-Inferno movies due in part to the return of Kirsty and the connection to the first two movies in general. I also thought it was a pretty good psychological thriller in its own right with an interesting concept dealing with Trevor's headaches and amnesia being connected to how he was killed and the brain surgery which triggers both pleasurable and painful memories.

Deader I thought suffered because the Hellraiser elements were poorly meshed with the original story, but it helps that more of the movie is set in the real world rather than in a personal Hell. I also rank it above Hellworld because the cenobites aren't just drug-induced hallucinations and so the plot directly involves Pinhead and the actual cenobites. It felt like a rip-off that the real cenobites only appear at the end of Hellworld.

Revelations comes last because frankly it looks like a bad fan film, and Stephen Smith Collins is no substitute for Doug Bradley. Revelations made me appreciate even the worst of the original 8 because of this.

The first one is the only good one. The second is OK. Toss the rest in a fire.

1. Inferno
2. Hellraiser
3. Hellbound
4. Hellseeker
5. Deader
6. Hell on Earth
7. Bloodline
8. Hellworld
9. Revelations

I rated them in terms of personal preference; I prefer most of the entries (minus Hellworld and Revelations) where the stories focus on the human characters and the trials they undergo through their experiences with the box, and the Cenobites and Pinhead are more or less neutral and are there to haunt the protagonists and remind them of their transgressions. I did enjoy Hell on Earth and Bloodline for the most part, but honestly I hated the fact that they turned Pinhead and the Cenobites into slasher caricatures (it just felt out of character for me).
