The girl who was pregnant, why did she pull thr jewel off the crown which openeed the case?

The character of Jess, I felt bad for her. However, there is no way she'd be a Prom Queen; she had punk rock written all over her (plus she seemed like an artist). I love this film, but I didn't buy Jess as a Prom candidate (I do think her character was likable and attractive, just not Prom material).
