A revenge movie with no revenge

I want to start out by saying I really enjoyed the first half of this movie, the character of Mary Lou was deliciously evil and the prom night fire was both grisly and well done. The film seemed to set up a very interesting storyline reminiscent of "Carrie" and "Nightmare on Elm St", yet halfway through, it completely falls apart.

I don't understand why Mary Lou, being as vindictive as she was, would waste her time after reemerging from the dead to kill random teenagers that served no purpose. Throughout the movie we're waiting for her to extract brutal revenge on her boyfriend who burned her alive, yet that never happens. The only people she even bothers to kill on screen are random friends of the girl she possesses, along with that girl's parents. Why? What's the point? She even kills the priest who had nothing to do with her death. When the time comes around where she's face to face with her killer, she allows him to knock her around and escape from her multiple times. Why?? She's already proven she can kill people with telekinetic powers, so why doesn't she?

The movie ends with her possessing him which again, makes no sense seeing as she "birthed" herself from the body of the girl she possessed. Why waste time possessing the man she came back to extract revenge on? Just stupid

Because they weren't just "random" teenagers. She not only wanted revenge but also the Prom Queen crown she was denied back in the 50s. The teenagers she kills are all of the candidates who potentially stand in her way of winning and one guy who was trying to rig the voting in favor of another girl for sexual favors who - again - is getting in her way of the crown. She doesn't kill the father and the mother only gets knocked through the door (we don't know if she is killed or not) because she is LITERALLY standing in her way of going to Prom. 

ML really possessed the perfect person to get what she wanted because Vicki was close to both of the men she wanted to kill AND was a Prom Queen candidate. It all made perfect sense to me. No arguments about the ending though. It sucked! Otherwise a great movie.

Yeah, I didn't like the ending; it was a cheap trick (though like Homer Simpson, I like the band Cheap Trick:-).
