Significance of the scene wit hthe drinking glass?

I don't understand the significance of the scene and the shocked reactions to his drinking of the contents of the glass? Perhaps the device was a bacterial filter of some sort? I initially believed the officer was suiciding for the units low morale.

Earlier in the film it is said that Nagasaki spoke ill of the commanding officer's "Water Purifier". The scene you're referring to has the commanding officer drinking Nagasaki's pee after putting it through the filter, to prove that it worked.

and then he sends the guy to the warfront, where he dies. It is meant to show ishii's personality.

The urine was filtered to the consistency of drinking water. It was little different than one of us drinking tap water. Our waste water had been recycled and channeled back into the public water supply. Regardless, I should have paid more attention to the movie, I didn't make the connection with urine, Ishi, or the transfer to the war-front.

Ishii actually presented a water purifier aparatus much like the one seen in the film, to emperor Hirohito.

And offered Hirohito to drink his purified pee.
Hirohito declined, and after that Ishii proceeded to drink the purified pee him self.

Ishii was a wimp.

Real men drink their urine straight.
