A police detective's wife is raped. She doesn't want him to investigate at all, while he wants to investigate it privately, not letting his boss know what he is investigating. Meanwhile, the assistant district attorney wants his help in investigating serial rapists. The two investigations become entangled. Intrigue and high stakes politics ensue between police HQ and the DA's office with everybody's career and marriage on the line.

One caveat: Even though this was made for broadcast TV and they did not show much flesh, the rape scenes may be psychologically disturbing. The rapist really illustrates the notion of the banality of evil and somehow that makes him extra creepy.

You left out some information there. It happened in a hotel room (similar to Derailed, but waaaay before Derailed and without the "twist") while she was having an affair. Then she and the boyfriend find themselves being blackmailed by the guy. It's been so long since I last saw this movie that I can't recall how or when her husband finally found out, though.

Well, her husband was a police investigator after all. The wife claimed she had been mugged. The policeman couldn't understand why she was so reluctant to help find the mugger. He launched his own investigation and discovered inconsistencies in her story. Then he followed his wife when she went to meet the guy she had been having an affair with, after which he started tapping her phone so that he heard everything when the blackmailer called. Eventually he was able to put all the pieces together. Then he went after the blackmailer/rapist. Very edgy thing to do all on his own, no back up.

I remember seeing this film and thinking it was complicated but pretty good and edgy,too--I believe it was a two-part mini-series--I think it was the first thing I'd seen the underrated Armand Assante in--never understood why he didn't become a big star.

Armand Assante is great. I first noticed him in "Private Benjamin" opposite Goldie Hawn but had no idea how good he is until I saw him in other things. There was an independent movie called "Belizaire the Cajun" (1986) in which he is very good but maybe better than the movie itself. He has had memorable recurring roles in TV series like "ER" and "NCIS". He had some starring roles in made-for-TV movies, notably "Napoleon and Josephine" (1987--same year as "Hands of a Stranger") and "Gotti" (1996). "Hands" is also interesting because a very young Ben Afleck appears in a minor role. Also, Blair Brown ("The Paper Chase", "Fringe") is good as the DA.
