I LOVE Org. Japanese Films..I HATE Remakes..BUT!!!!

I saw both the 1987 Japanese film, and the new "Americanized" version; and while the Japanese version was historically accurate, as a MOVIE, the edge goes to the American remake.

Here are my reasons...

The Japanese film covered too much detail and was pretty slow moving. The American film, while not being historical, tells the film quite well, and is more of a family film. My BIG reason for liking the American film better is the ending....

< SPOILERS>

The American film ends with Hachiko's "dream sequence" and then the historical footnote about the real Hachiko and his statue.

Now, I realize that the Japanese audience does not need reminding about the statue, the end..where the dead body of Hachiko lies in the snow while people walk all around it, without so much as a glance..(Mind you, Hachiko was a LEGEND, way before he died!) was disturbing and left a bitter taste in my mouth....

I do not know what the screenwriter and director were thinking!!! ..and the end song was awful.
Otherwise a very good movie, and as I said historically accurate...but that ending???

I don't think the Japanese version was that accurate. I don't know why they changed it, but in the Japanese version, only the meat vendor was nice to Hachi-Ko. The train station manager went as far as to insult Hachi-Ko. The Japanese version was more depressing than the American remake.

I'm only guessing that everybody in Japan knew the story of Hachi-Ko, so they decided to make the movie a little different with the same end results.

Both films were sad and I think the real tearjerker goes to the Japanese at this part only because you feel so bad for Hachi and contempt for all the heartless people who didn't give a care about him/her. The American, while sad, at least had a happy ending. Cliched, but something to smile about.
