Is Arness wearing the worst wig ever or black paint??

How can the make-up people and directors be so friggin blind??? His face is a sea of crags, like a wrinkled old prune....and his hair is jet black....Why do they do that to old stars...and us??

I have to agree. His performance was great, but giving him the hair color he had in the black-and-whiye episodes of the show was a really bad idea. He should have been grey-haired. They let Kitty look her age, and it worked great; I really believed that she was a ragged ex-prostitute who drank a lot. The yellow teeth were great.

Mannon also looked like he should have.

"What do you want me to do, draw a picture? Spell it out!"

You guys missed the part when Matt was in the woods rubbing blackberry juice in his hair. He had to look young for the hot squaws he was doing. I agree with shandy8, I will add 'smoked a lot' to his description of Miss Kitty.

Finally got around to seeing this, and while a fun show to watch otherwise, Jim Arness' hair stood out like a sore thumb. I wonder what he thought of it? With lines on his face, silver hair would've looked just fine....

I had wondered about Kitty's speech sounding a bit off, then later learned it was mouth/throat cancer that took her only a couple of years later.

The hair was pretty lame and I never saw so many wrinkles on a face that wasn't at least 90 years old.

Miss Kitty looked like she had been rode hard and put away wet but then, I always thought she looked like that.

The flashbacks were a hoot with all that make-up on her face, the blue eyeshadow and false eyelashes. I loved westerns but looking back at them now, they were pretty silly.

Arness was 64 when this was filmed so they had to hide his age somehow. Remember only 12 years have lapsed since the original Mannon episode even though it was actually 18.

that bad dye job ruined the show. he should have looked his age. I think today they wouldn't have tried it. reminds me of that biblical flick with Richard harris in a bad dye job. "moses," I think. 'Return to Gunsmoke,'
could have been well done.

I just watched this over the weekend. Liked the movie, but Arness' hair just looked so silly. Everyone else looked age appropriate. Knowing that she was probably HIV positive at the time, I actually thought Amanda Blake looked better here than she did in the waning days of the series. Maybe she had a facelift around that time.

Annoying the world since 1960!
