I really enjoyed it. Anthony is always good.

The ending kind of creeped me out.

Why did the ending creep you out?

Just finished watching. It was very good, although I thought the ending would be different.

**SPOILERS**

Bill (Anthony Hopkins) reveals to his girlfriend (before he breaks up with her) that the real reason he left his wife was their son. Everything was fine, he said, until Christopher was born. He didn't leave Emmy; he left Christopher. This explained the earlier flashbacks, which puzzled me. Bill had fantasies of killing his son. Although he does not, he obviously has an anger problem and seems to be a ticking time bomb. I thought it would end with him going off the deep end and killing the boy. Instead, he is shown sitting on his deck, listening to the sounds of the neighborhood.

His life is meaningless, as he said to the girl before the breakup. He has no friends and realizes what a terrible thing he did to Roger by encouraging him to lie in court. I think Roger realizes at the end that Bill is a sociopath.

A sociopath? really? well, that's one way to look at it.
but I think he truly enjoyed all the attention of being married, the love, the freedom etc, then once the baby came he lost all that, he had to play second fiddle, and play daddy. perhaps he wasn't ready for that. but he didn't neglect his boy and he did love him, a lot of fathers in that circumstances would of just buggered off and never came back, women too. but he stayed, I thing he was a man who was hurt, confused, and getting old alone and didn't know what to feel.
became bitter, and started to see the world in meaningless way.
he was truthful about chris, but did he really mean it deep down? he felt so guilty about how he used Roger for his own selfish desires. but then felt sickened by what had happened. so I think he was just playing out some revenge in his own mind for the hurt that he got through his separation. (we all have fantasies of things like doing harm or getting revenge but never going through with it)

anyway, I enjoyed the movie, It was a good realistic drama dealing with child custody and what happens to the couples during them.

reply

Yes I saw it and have the DVD. I think it's really good, its a thinking woman's (or man's) film! As a study of loneliness in the London suburbs of the 1980's it's without equal.

reply

Great great movie. A lot of recognizable faces. Haven't seen this subject matter dealt with in the movies yet.
