other cut scenes besides duke's altered death

Even many years ago when this first aired on WPIX NY as the full movie (Sunday afternoon), there was one scene where you can tell an apparent cut was made:

This scene is when Golobulus gets stabbed in his eye from the shell like knife (I have not watched the film in a few years, but I think it was Lt. Falcon who did this to him). Did anyone else notice the apparent cut? It shows him grab the knife and then roughly cuts to Golobulus already screaming. I always see mention of Duke's altered death scene (and now to find out supposedly the Japanese version is intact), but never any mention of this

I can't be the only one who noticed the this unsmooth cut? If indeed it the footage still exsst somewhere, I would love to see it

reply

The scene plays the same on the Dvd, as it always has. Falcon takes the dagger and all you see it it going toward Golobulus' eye, then it cuts rel quickly and then it cuts to him screaming.

I realize that, but what I was asking is if that actual animation existed at all? It seems like they did infact show the full knife going in possibly before release and had to cut it out for being too violent.

You can see that in the final version it is sort of a rough cut, but there has
never been a verification (at least from what I have read) on whether or not it was cut out before it's release

the film was aimed more so for teens andn ot so much for little kids. This was supposed to have been released theatrically originally. SO the violence level was stepped up a bit. However sicne it ended up just airing on television instead, you can see some scenes were a few more seconds of graphic violence might have occured but appears to be missing

The scene I was tlaking about, you can see the knife in hand and then it cuts to it already having been plunged into the eye of golobulus. The way this is shown it looks like footage is missing to show the knife actually going into the eye.

The film came out in 1986. Truly violent animation was not common in this country. Hasbro also has a say on who can live and who dies and how (as far as the cartoon went). let us not forget that Duke was impaled by a snake spear and blood shot all over the place. Something like that was unheard of for an animated film shown on regular network television

So no it was not made for kids (like little 5 year old Johnny) but more so the 11-15 year age group. As most who were G.I. joe's main fanbase were around that age at the time

the lasers were suppossed to be bullets. Keep in mind it was also probably much cheaper and easier on the animators to draw laser like lines than 10 million bullets flying across the screen

The reason why they can show Duke getting impailed by a snake is the same reason for stun lasers instead of bullets and why they never showed Golobulus getting stabbed in the eye, it has nothing to do with cost to make the show or cuts it's showing kids things that aren't plausible so they can't imitate them and get hurt.

for all the violence that makes the cut, Snake Spears, lasers et al

a Human plunging a realistic Knife into the Face of another Human?(Humanoid?) seems like the kind of thing that would have been vetoed at the story board stage

the 'bad cut' may simply be the result of not creating an alternative transition;

they can Imply pretty much anything, but a direct display of 'Real' Violence in an animated Project, least of all one which follows a Saturday morning Cartoon/toy commercial would set the moral Guardians' underwear on fire

-- one must remember this was still an era where US Audiences still operated on the "it's animated, it must be for kids" mindset.

got an email to see this thread was replied to. I really think it was filmed as mentioned in my first post, you can see it is a true cut and not a "bad transition"

In response to Tjanssen411 thread above--

you also though have to keep in mind that like Transformers the movie, ALL of the violence and graphic work was stepped up due to them being a "movie". Transformers the movie had scenes of a head (robotic) getting crushed under a car tire, main characters clearly getting 'bullet" holes blown through them (the Deceptacon attack on the shuttle). Those shots would have never aired on the normal cartoon of the show but for the movie they also knew showing the "tv show" would not work and thus stepped up a few things.

In the case for G.I. Joe it was the same deal since this was supposed to have been a theatrical feature-- Also do not forget it had Duke getting impaled by a snake spear and did show the blood shoot out of his chest. A shot like that would have never aired in the normal tv show cartoon but the movie is a whole different story. So it really stands to chance they filmed the shot anyway

It is also entirely possible that this graphic eye scene may have been made with a foreign/Overseas release in mind. In many cases and even with children's cartoons, they do allow more violence and other graphic images overseas that would not fly on tv here

I hate the way the imdb has posts laid out here. So I now see below this someone else mentioned reading that it was filmed-- so the search for an answer goes on

Yes they filmed it. Yes, it got cut. Just listen to the commentary track on the Blu-ray/DVD and they explain this.
But it got cut before the release. So I doubt anyone knows where that footage is. Probably lost in some warehouse somewhere.

reply

A little late in the conversation, but I have heard that there was a visual of the knife actually going into Golobulus's eye which has been cut out.

Where did you hear this? Was it one of the original producers, animators, or director?
