The first time I watch G.I.JOE the movie

When I first saw this movie, the intro was just WOW. I must watch it four or five times before I watch the whole movie.

When I first watch the movie I thought the movie score would be more like Transformers The Movie because they both were made from SUNBOW.

But the music was more like the score in the show and I was not too thrill about that.

But when I watch the movie again I thought in fairness the movie was made for video and Transformers The Movie got to be seen at the movies.

The music was not that bad at all even some of the score was good.

So I thought I would ask, what was your first opinion the first time you watched G.I.JOE THE MOVIE?

Thanks and take care

By the way, G.I.JOE, YO O JOE!

I watched with my three sons and we were already fans so we loved it - especially SGT Slaughter!!

When I was a kid I hated 'G.I. Joe the movie'. Just hated it! Like a poo filled doughnut. I had been on board since the beginning, when it had more realism. The toy line, the cartoon and to a lesser degree the comic had gotten more and more out there since 1982 and this was the tipping point.

I had sort of boycotted it over the years but I watched it again about a year ago. I still have the same complaints, but one of the things I did like was the Sgt. Slaughter stuff. I also liked the new intro song.

"No where to run. No where to hide. Panic spreading far and wide. Who can turn the tide? G.I. Joooooooooooe!"

’Cause there’s thunder in your heart... Every move is like lighning!

reply

Yes, they had realism from the beginning as evidenced by their rifles which shot lasers yet ejected shell casings, a teleporter activated by three exotic minerals, a 12 foot tall giant steered by video game controls which ran his brain through an electronic headband, etc. Or maybe you meant the first season of the series which featured such realistic situations as Cobra using life model decoys made out of grey polymer to make Shipwreck think he was 10 years in the future, or an explosion which sent three Joes to a parallel universe. Or maybe the second season when Cobra used the DNA of history's greatest evildoers including the vampire Dracula and some fictional serpent god to create Serpentor in a lab. Or the Lady of the Lake summoning Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow to fight for the right to wield Excalibur.

But a race of biomechanoid bug-people from the dawn of time hiding out in the Himalayas? Preposterous!

The first two mini-series were great (MASS Device was the best). From there, everything went down hill. The series was truly awful. I stopped watching it and this movie completely went unnoticed by me. I didn't revisit GI JOE again till a few years ago when I read a review of this film. It sounded so atrociously funny that I HAD to see it for myself. I mean, Cobra La? I recalled the toys and having thought Hasbro had sank to a new low. Cobra Commander turning into a snake? What the heck was that? The whole thing seemed centered around humiliating CC, so I had to see it. Killing Duke? A cheap gimmick that felt the need to copy Optimus Prime's death.

My brother and I laughed so hard at this silliness. The opening scene at the Statue of Liberty was overdone silliness, special attention to CC being the low man on the totem pole who gets to fly down like a low-class soldier to plant a bomb. The song lifted the whole affair to another level of humor. Who thought this was going to be cool? LOL! Don't even get me started on how utterly dumb the whole Cobra-La thing was. They'd have done better to ignore that tripe just like Larry Hama did in the comic books.

I apologize if my light-hearted view of this film offends fans. Take it for what it's worth, my opinion. My fond memories are with the first two mini-series. This was not a part of my nostalgic years, viewed completely as a reflection on what went wrong with GI JOE through the years. I do love this film, but only because it is comedy gold.

I guess I'm one of those rare fans who loved Serpentor, Galvatron, Falcon and Rodimus Prime. Being that I was like eight or nine when the movie came out I wasn't as critical as some of the slightly (or in some cases not so slightly..) older fans were. As for the show, the mini series were great, season 1 was awesome, season 2 was even better, and despite it's oh so obvious flaws I even enjoyed the DiC series. I don't take offense when people express their disdain for the movie or series, but I do wonder at times exactly what they expected from a glorified toy commercial bound by FCC rules and targeted at children? I dunno... I guess it comes down to the fact that some kids grew up on the comics while others grew up on the show.

I caught it by accident. I remembered turning off Transformers the movie coz my mom told me to go rake leaves or something, but when I saw this one...ho ho I sooo dug it. There are oodles of holes, etc...but hell at least they kind of kept the same characters.

"Killing Duke? A cheap gimmick that felt the need to copy Optimus Prime's death. "

Maybe you should have actually watched the movie. Duke didn't die.

Also, they actually copied Optimus Prime's death off of what would have been Duke's death. But the writers changed it so Duke wouldn't die, because the fans of Transformers didn't take kindly to OP's death. (check Wikipedia for more.)

I don't think this movie is comedy gold compared to the actual Sunbow episodes that were released prior to this film.. (and even worse, after it's release.) So I'm not really able to follow you there.

There were some REAL shoddy animations done in the aforementioned episodes and the budget for Gi Joe clearly started to dwindle.

And don't get me started on the live action movie. That really looks awful

I know all about that. Duke was slated to die, but the bad reaction to Optimus Prime's death in Transformers The Movie prompted them to very cheaply edit the movie. In Japan, the original version was shown where Duke does indeed die from injuries obtained from Serpentor.

"I don't think this movie is comedy gold compared to the actual Sunbow episodes that were released prior to this film.. (and even worse, after it's release.) So I'm not really able to follow you there"

The DIC series was just plain bad. This overblown piece of fluff had great animation, but a laughably bad story that makes it absolute comedy gold. Cobra-LALALALALALALAL, nuff said!

"And don't get me started on the live action movie. That really looks awful"

I absolutely agree. As much as I laugh at this film, I'll take it any day over the Stephen Sommers atrocity.

I didn't like G.I. Joe: The Movie. G.I. Joe was originally about a special military unit fighting a terrorist organization, and while the animated series contained fantastic elements before, the focus on Cobra-La showed how far the franchise had strayed from its roots. I felt like I was watching Inhumanoids instead of G.I. Joe. Cobra Commander's origin story in the movie contradicted what little had been previously revealed about him. In the episodes that preceded the movie, it seemed that Serpentor's flaws as a leader were becoming more apparent and Cobra Commander was gaining support to retake control of COBRA. In the movie, however, Cobra Commander was blamed for all of COBRA's failures and the rest of COBRA remained loyal to Serpentor. Old favourites were sidelined in order to make way for new characters, but some of them received little in the way of character development. One of the new recruits, Chuckles, didn't get a word of dialogue. The new Joe who received the most attention, Lt. Falcon, was described as an "arrogant misfit" with a poor record, leaving one to wonder how he managed to receive the rank of lieutenant and entry into G.I. Joe. The quality of the animation rarely rose above that of a TV episode and much of the music and sound effects had been recycled from elsewhere. It's telling that the events in G.I. Joe: The Movie were largely ignored or reversed in subsequent stories.
