American as Cowboy trope

The only American character in this movie is the U.S. soldier-neighbor, Tom McWhirter. His character is portrayed with the typical, lazy trope of American as cowboy: over-the-top fake Texas accent, blond hair, ridiculously gold leafed baseball hat, big talking inability to beat the Russian spy at anything. McWhirter’s over-sexed wife even starts her adulterous “come on” to the Russian spy while Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” plays ironically in the background. The Brits had no problem making the Russian characters three dimensional but when it came to portrayals of the American ally, it was all shallow caricatures. Now I don’t feel so bad about the turn-about portrayal of the British in Mel Gibson’s Patriot.
