When the two teens snuck out and saw their mom's room and granddad, why didn't they try to find the kitchen and grab as much food as they could sneak out. After all, they had not eaten in a week, I would have went crazy with hunger.

Maybe going to the kitchen would have been too risky. Too much chance to run into a maid or someone like that.
