The Photo of Emmett Till

I think the most gut-wrenching image in the entire series (and there are a lot of them) was the photo of Emmett Till's mutilated face. His face just looks . . . melted.

I saw this in 4th grade, and I had a post-traumatic-stress-type-thing for a while. I would be afraid I would see him in mirrors, etc.

I saw the photo of Till when I was like a junior in high school (over 14 years ago now) and I'm STILL having post-traumatic issues. I am not usually bothered by things but that has stayed with me. His death was the real start of the American Civil Rights movement; not to take anything away from Rosa Parks. She refused to move to the back of the bus because of Till's death. It's important that we know the significance of the events of this time.

It happened to me too.I first saw it as a kid while reading old Jet magazines that were printed around that time.It broke my heart.I'm 31 now and this was in the late 80's and I remember it like it was yesterday.A 14 year old boy.So sad.

When Till's mother let the world see what happen, that is what broke the silence and open brought Americas trouble issue into light for the world could see. If they did this to a 14 year old boy, no Negro, man women or child was safe.
