The mother and the baby

I don't understand how this mother thought she could actually hide the baby? I get that she was trying to protect it and whatnot, but she obviously knew what the ending would be. The sad realities of what these bastards did comes shining through that scene alone. Its amazing the other prisoners didn't rat on her.
