I have to agree with you that this is one of my childhood favorites as well! At first I was so disapointed to see the 4.6 rating, but then I thought anyone who didn't grow up with this movie as a child wouldn't like it. Looking at the people posting messages for this movie I have to say I am happy to see others out there that loved this movie growing up, and because of it still do!
The only other thing I have to say is about all those people who gave this movie a bad rating.... "EWWWWWWWWWWWW!"

The current (July 28 2013) IMDb score is 5.0, with a 5.6 arithmetic mean, which may be a more appropriate score.

The story is king.
It's now climbed to 5.4 as of August 9th 2015. Not sure what caused a nearly 30 year old film to suddenly start climbing like that, but no complaints.
My love of this film is certainly aided by nostalgia. It opened on my 13th birthday, and I went to see it with my Mom (who passed away a few years ago), and she and I had so much fun.
