Atlantic City Girls - genius scene

Just watched this and I think the scene of the 'Atlantic City Girls,' where Neils the screenwriter describes his pen pal relationships with some girls in Atlantic City, is brilliant.

There's something quite funny but also kind of creepy/disturbing about it - Neils keeps laughing through the scene but we're not sure what is supposed to be so amusing. The flashback with him in a blond wig pretending to be a teenager just tops it off. Towards the end of the scene the camera cuts to Lars in front of a mirror reciting lines from Taxi Driver - 'you looking at me?' Genius!

The way the movie goes right from this scene to the terrifying ending is one of the most mesmerizing sequences I've seen in awhile.

I thought the scene was merely amusing, until he started talking about candy and hershey bars, then i started laughing too. There is something oddly comedic about the most banal of American things, like candy bars or soft drinks. I don't know if it's just me or if it's a European thing.
