Basie was an opportunist and a survivor who would make use of whomever was available to him. Frank was a convenient and willing sidekick/gopher, nothing more. From what I remember of both the novel and the film there’s no suggestion that sex was on either man’s mind.

Whenever two male characters in a movie are friends, or display any emotion regarding their friendship, it automatically means they are gay lovers.
