Without a doubt Eddie Murphy will be ten times funnier than Chris Rock....I cant really find that much of a difficult comparison or contemplate too much about it! Raw and Delirious outdoes Rock's stand up comedies by far!!!
First of all, Murphy took alot of his act from richard pryor. If you knew anything about comedy, Murphy admits this fact. RAW and DELIRIOUS are both classics besides that, because he updates alot of the stories that Pryor used to describe his observations with his own.
As for Chris Rock, he is much more like George Carlin, in delivery and style than Eddie Murphy. Rock's observations are no less funny, just the style is different. I laugh out loud to both, but remember that that Chris Rock is almost 40, (alot of us 30+ can relate to his stuff) and Murphy did DELIRIOUS at 23, and RAW at 27 (which came out when I was 19, and when I saw DELRIOUS) People remember Murphy as being classic, but that is revisionist. Go rent Pryor's HERE and NOW, and LIVE in CONCERT, and you will laugh at him too, even though its from the 70's.
I agree somewhat about Murphy doing a little Pryor and his observations are identical, but then again Murphy's originality and taste for comedy was different than Pryor's too.....I dont think Pryor would be able to fly off the handle with his imagination and do a Honeymooners anal penetration sketch....he could, but he never did and I don't ever think he would've. Eddie Murphy isn't the king of comedy, I really dont have much of a opinion of who is because everyone has their own trademarks of humor , but Eddie Murphy is definitely ingenious nonetheless!
BTP is a comedian who is just getting into his prime & still has cutting edge material. Raw is a sad portrait of a once-hilarious comedian who has gone from cutting-edge material to recycling 5 year old material with a tired antiquated approach.
Even Murphy knew it wasn't nearly as funny as his previous stuff - why do you think he retreated from standup ?
Eddie stopped doing stand up because he was getting more into his movie career, he won't release delirious on dvd because he dosn't want his family-fun reputation tainted. Paramount had the rights to Raw so they decided to release it. Eddie murphy has the rights to Delerious. Without a doubt Eddie Murphy is one of, if not , the funniest man alive. I wish he would have filmed more stand up but he was thinking about the future. Chris Rock is annoying as hell after watching 20 minutes of his stand up, hes funny, but incomparable to Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy's stand up is also very rewatchable where Chris Rock's gets old extremely fast. Eddie revolutionized comedy, he is a legend. You just cannot compare the two comedians. Im sorry for those of you who just can't deal with this simple fact.
haven't seen BTP... *ashamed* but no one can be any funnier than Ed! eventhough he doesn't do stand up anymore...all his movies crack me up....twice... =) and stop all the hate! Chris is funny to...you saw the michael jackson video to, disdn't you..??!!
Bring the Pain was funny but Raw had to top it... but if you want a Chris Rock that tops this... Bigger and Blacker hands down... I laughed my ass off watchin that *beep*
Sarge: I only drink the blood of my *enemies*.. and occasionally a strawberry Yoo Hoo.
Chris Rock is the first comic in a long time to give Eddie any real competition in the field of stand-up comedy. BRING THE PAIN and his subsequent special were both hysterically funny. Neither were as good as DELIRIOUS, however.
I'm not a fan of Chris Rock, but I did see one stand up where he jokes about girls listening to rap music, and that was brilliant. I have to go with Raw
last ten minĂștes of RAW was bowshat though. Get this guy some water. I'm only saying that because I switched channels to RAW at the end and didn't laugh. Maybe it was better in context. I didn't have any griped about it during my first viewing.
Raw is hands down funnier than anything that Chris Rock has ever dreamed of doing. Eddie Murphy also explains in Raw the he used to listen to Richard Pryor records when he was young, that would explain we he would do a similar act. Too bad Eddie doesn't do that many good movies anymore!
Enough of this comparison sh*t. Just because they are two black comedians this does not warrant a comparison of these routines. They are both great stand up routines relevant for their era. OK, there are similarities in the subject matter and delivery - Rock is Eddie's boy (hence his inclusion in Cop2, Boomerang, and Vampire in Brooklyn), and Rock even cites Murphy as an inspiration - of course there will be similarities.
At the end of the day, Rock's subject matter has more depth and relevance than Eddie's, however Eddie does better impersonations. I can't believe I got sucked into this post, my post now contradicts my first sentence. Anyway, they are both good comedians for different reasons much like Jordan and Rodman are great basketball players for different reasons.
We like Michael so much we let the first kid slide.......
It's like apples and oranges, or which colour is better, both have their strengths and weaknesses. Eddie Murphy(IMHO)can run with a concept better than Chris Rock, but can't deliver a punch line as well. It seems that Chris Rock will say *anything* to get to get a laugh, but his standup was recorded years later, and maybe Eddie was a little reluctant to raise eyebrows at the time. For my money, if I had to choose, it's Chris Rock...but Eddie is a very close second.
