'the words or the beat'

I'm confused. Eddie takes a pop at white guys for being unable to dance and questions whether they are listening to the words or the beat.

Which is he saying that you should listen to?

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong but don't you do both? You move in time with the beat and while you're keeping time with your feet you let the lyrics or emotional vibe dictate what you do with the rest of your body. At least, that's how I dance!

Sorry to reply after five years but he's saying that white guys don't listen to the words or the beat while dancing.
He's not saying that you should make it a priority to listen to one as opposed to the other.
Sadly I could be one of those white guys he's referring to when he came up with that theory..
