Shamefully UNfunny !!!

I just watched it again last night in hopes that it was actually funnier than I remember it. It isn't. It's horrible. This is the perfect way to capture the shift in Eddie Murphy's career. He went from cutting-edge wit in the early 80s to becoming a full blown movie star in the mid-80s. This shows just how UNfunny and antiquated his comedic talent had become in that short period of time. With this, he is recycling old material (Mr. T ; Michael Jackson ; his drunk father). He even manages to recycle the whole ice-cream skit to a point. This time the children are teasing the kid without the McDonald's burger instead of the ice-cream.

It's not just the recycled material that makes this whole thing bad. Murphy's approach is just plain not funny. I guess this is what happens when you spend 4 years on movie sets & let your standup talent slide. Apprently, Eddie forgot just how hard it is to do standup - and realized he needed to stop doing it before he embarrassed himself some more. Good move Eddie - stay away from the standup...and keep doing those stupid Dr. Dolittle & Nutty Professor movies. They don't require much work & make you lots of money.

Are you an actor? Have you been in approx. 36+ films? If not don't make crap comments about how much work is involved in being one. Your whole message is full of crap.
Were you ever taught 'If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all?'
You have forgotten one big thing, He is making lots of money & by you watching His movies your helping His wallet to grow. Then you come and winge about Him.

By the way I study acting & have been an extra in many movies, so I do know how much work is involved.

reply

thank god someone did it, someone had to tell him to shuddup

Your welcome. I have noticed alot of ppl come 2 this site to winge about everything. I was thinking I should start a group just for them.

Anybody who thought this wasn't funny totally and completely lacks a sense of humor.

reply

it was hilarious.a great stand up. how did you think it wasnt funny

reply

I think your crazy i remember being in pain from laughing so hard it was the best stand up i have ever seen.

reply

If you think this was Eddie's best standup then you must have never seen Delirious or heard any of his early albums. They were far FAR superior to this.

Eddie made the right decision not to do another standup film after this. He was smart enough to see he couldn't keep his standup fresh anymore & just started with those idiotic Dr. Dolittle & Nutty Professor movies. Of course those came after he also realized he no longer even had film comedy talent anymore after so many of his comedies bombed also - but that's a whole different thing.

Thanks for staying away from standup Eddie. It was painful to see you embarrass yourself in this film.

reply

Don't pay attention to those insulting pinheads. I agree RAW was weak, weak, weak. I don't understand why Paramount decided to release this and not DELIRIOUS, a far better perfomance.

reply

I think the first half hour of this is razor-sharp high-lerium, but after that Eddie's rantings about women and his super-stardom ran on too long. The rest of the film gets kind of boring, hit and miss.

Hey, MyDarkStar, if you watch standup comedy at all, you'll realise tha just about every single comedian rehashes his jokes sometimes, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Eddie Izzard, even Bill Cosby used his stand up jokes in the Cosby Show.

They do it because its funny and because hey also improve upon it.

I mean so what if he used the same joke twice? He's allowed, he came up with it in the first place. In fact most of them probably do it for the people who missed out on their earlier routines.

Plus they only re-use a few jokes, they dont re-do the whole act.

So why dont you just shut up, if you didnt enjoy iy, fine, but don't take the enjoyment off the rest of us, just because you are a sad, lonely freak with no sense of humor.

reply

ok if this wasnt funny please tell us what you call funny. if i laugh more than i did with raw i'll believe you.

reply

"tell us what you call funny"

sure :

Chris Rock - "Bring The Pain"
Chris Rock - "Bigger & Blacker"

reply

ive seen them both and raw is better

reply

calling Raw better than Bigger & Blacker is so ridiculous that I don't even know how to begin to say how wrong it is

reply

Thats your opinion but I thuoght this movie was *beep* hillarious! One of the best stand up's ever! Better than delirious.I think he should do another stand up but I doubt it will happen. Also he didnt recycle material with Mr.T.In Delirious he was talking about how Mr.T was gay and in Raw he was talking about how Mr.T got pissed off at Eddie Murphy because of what he said in Delirious.

I won't even put in an argument saying how ridiculous your post is - and how you completely missed how he DID recycle Mr. T.

you just don't get it

reply

I respect the fact that you prefer Chris Rock's Bigger & Blacker and Bring The Pain, but saying that it's ridiculous that someone prefers Raw to them, is what's ridiculous.

Could you elaborate on what you like so much more about those 2 performances, that makes it ridiculous for anyone to enjoy Raw more? This is after all a matter of taste - not facts.

AGREED. On all counts. Most overrated comic film ever. Thanks for saying it.

I saw Raw for the first time. I was old enough to "get" most of the jokes with Michael Jackson and Mr. T. Unfortunately, younger audiences won't make the connection because they wouldn't know just how famous those two and Bill Cosby were at the time. So, the movie probably won't date well . BTW, I think he should go back and do the stand up comedy and get his edge back. No, he should not stay with the dull franchises he has been coasting on during the nineties and early zeroes. Eddie Murphy needs to get back out there where he began and get his groove back!

you can forget about him ever going back to stand-up. It's twice as much work & he'll make half as much. He'll just keep making more lame Nutty Professor movies & all of those other pathetic movies as well, like Nizbit, or whatever it's called.

He's already lost his edge beyond recovery.

You're right, of course. he has too many "yes" men around him to tell him he has lost his edge. Perhaps he might surf these message boards and see the light.
