What prevented any sequels?

This was a hit in theaters and a pretty solid VHS rental back in the 80s but I'm surprised the studios didn't commit to at least one more sequel.

Did both Hanks and Akroyd dismiss the possibility? Both had made some pretty crappy films before this came out (ie - Dr. Detroit, The Money Pit, Volunteers, Into the Night, Spies Like Us, etc.) before Dragnet came out.

The fact that not every damn movie needs a sequel? This line of reasoning is exactly what's wrong with Hollywood today. If they aren't remaking it, they're rebooting it, or they're making a sequel, or they're stretching a single book into 2 or 3 movies. All designed to get more money out of less effort, and the sheep are lining up for this crap. Most of the time, movies are good for one run, there is no need for a sequel, and there definitely isn't a need to remake it, or reboot an entire series.

And The Money Pit and Spies Like Us were actually pretty fun movies. I wouldn't call them "pretty crappy", definitely not in comparison to Dragnet.

While I pretty much agree with you, a Dragnet franchise could've been the lighter side of Lethal Weapon. Not saying you're wrong but it could've been interesting.

I think they squeezed pretty much every last possible piece of comedic gold that they could. IMHO, Hard to come up with anything that could top busting the P.A.G.A.N.s!! LOL

I remember an interview on Canadian TV with Aykroyd a long time ago where he said that, in the aftermath of this movie, he had a script and a commitment from Hanks, but studio politics and whatnot stopped it from happening. Odds are it wouldn't have been very good, because most comedy sequels aren't funny. But anyway, it almost happened.

I'd love to see a sequel today to this!

Would be great if both Dan and Tom would drop some weight, and do another movie. One movie only with these two isn't enough.

There should be a Dragnet 2 i don't know why it hasn't been considered if there was going to be a Dragnet 2 but Dan Aykroyd would be retired as a cop by now some unknown actors would have to replace their characters Tom Hanks would probably up for a sequel but probably not Dan Aykroyd Tom Hanks would comeback but not as a cop he would be captain by now and two new cops can will replace pep streebek and joe friday.

A thing that might also have been killing a sequel of the movie, are the two Dragnet series that came after the movie, who both got cancelled after only two seasons.
I guess people expected to get comedy in those because of the 1987 movie, but then where utterly disappointed, when they found out that all they got where mediocre crime series with no comedy what so ever.
