Under-rated

The first 50 minutes or so of this is comedic genius - but it loses steam once Joes takes 'The Virgin' Connie Swail out on the date .

Ackroyd is very near to his best in this , and Hanks shows the charm and comedic timing that would be honed to perfection in his later , far more succesful movies .

"Listen, hotshot. I'm gonna tell you something right now. I don't care for you or for the putrid sludge you're troweling out. But until they change the laws and put you sleaze kings out of business, my job is to help you get back your stenchering boxes of smut. And since I'll be doing it holding my nose, I'll be doing it with one hand. "

Iv gotta say that i enjoyed the film. Its good for a laugh and Ackroyd's acting IS genius. However the plot is terribly cheesy and lets the film down a great deal. But as i say, its a good film to relax back and laugh at if youve got nothing better to do.

I agree, I just bought the DVD. Emil Muzz is one of my all-time favorite characters.

Snickers Bar, chewing gum, and my attorney d#ckwad!!

Love that line.

Don't you mean the virgin Connie Swail??

Dabney Coleman is great as well..

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Dan Aykroyd's a genius and Ton Hanks did a good job. Rapping the guy his rights, brilliant. And them performing their 'goat-dance' in the office totally cracked me up. I really liked this film, I don't care what anyone else thinks.

reply

Ah, but it was "Chewing gum, Snickers bar, and my attorney, badge kisser!" :)

The plot is idiotic, but couldn't be anything else for a comedy. Like investigating a serial killer would have ruined the tone. But Aykroyd's lightning quick delivery of lines was skill beyond reason. This might be my fave Hanks performance. Perfect goof. "And her favorite color is blue...Jesus Christ I'm about to be eaten here!!"

My hidden treasure is that I actually have the music video to the movie. Hanks and Aykoryd **dancing!!** to that song "City of Crime". Funniest damn thing.

its a underrated hidden gem. i love this film, sure it dont rank compared to greater epics, but its funny, the plot athough a little bland, fits, and the acting is great.

Saw this film with my husband during our engagement. He was embarrassed by my racous laughing. Told me so in the parking lot. I retorted that the lady in front of me was laughing a lot. "She was laughing at you", he said. Flash forward: everytime this shows up on tv my hubby laughs racously in the basement. There's no getting away from it, funny is funny.

I must agree. This movie continues to make me laugh after all these years. I did notice two goofs after watching the DVD again. I have tried to submit these goofs numerous times to the IMDB but they dont' do anything with them. So I'll subit them here amongst the fans.

Goof 1: When Joe first meets Pep and is narrating his specs he says Pep weighs 165 pounds. Later when Pep follows Joe to the house he says "oh great he's freddy krueger.. and out comes the claw, I'm 170 pounds of ground chuck."

Goof 2: At the coffee strip club Pep asks Joe for 20 bucks and he gives it to him. In the next scene Joes narration says that he gave Pep 50 bucks.

Got to agree. Dan Ackroyd at his best straight-man game. And I could even tolerate Tom Hanks in this (and he usually annoys me). But the best part, for me, after Ackroyd, is the creepy priest.

There's also a lot of goofs involving the dates and times that Friday quotes. But, all goofs aside, this is still a hilarious movie and one of my childhood favorites!

It's a fun, silly movie that still holds up well today. Ackroyd is comic genius in this. Hanks is great, too. A perfect example of how talented actors can carry a film with a flimsy plot.
