1963 : It looks more like 1983 at times...

When the movie was released a large number of critics mentioned the unconvincing 'sense of time' in this movie - it's 1963 but it doesn't have the feel of being 1963. Obviously some of the music is wrong and Patrick Swayze's hair looks pure 1980s (as does Jennifer Grey's , now I think about it). There is a smooch scene where 'Baby' takes off her blouse and wears a very 1980s looking white bra beneath - now I wasn't around at the time so was that style correct as early as 1963? Or is this another moment where disbelief needs a little suspending?

I agree, I've seen this movie like a million times and I sometimes forget it's supposed to be set in the 60s. I wasn't around in the 60s and was only a child in the 80s so I only can base 60s style on tv and other movies and some of those other movies and tv shows seem to do the 60s better than this movie. It's something that never really bothered me though because I do love the movie so much.

I've always felt that the soundtrack had too many 80s songs in it. Took away what little 60s feel this movie had.

I was there back in the '60s. The bra is correct, and there are only two songs that are not from the time, however, one of those 2 was sung by a performer from then.

I think it looked very 60s,they did a good job.

I've seen my mom's high school photos and then this movie. Patrick Swayze being hot is great. But it does not completely save the movie. They should have put more time into costuming/styling and even the music. Or just make it 1980's and call it a day.

reply

They couldn't make it 1980's because Johnny could've just whisked her off to Planned Parenthood and be done with it.

they could have at least made it the late 1960's. I know this movie was big when it came out and Swayze was good looking but it wasn't that great. Am assuming that swayze being handsome was the point of this movie. Bc they really did not pay attention to much else.
