It wasn't Johnny's baby Penny was knocked up with. It's was Robbie the creeps!
True it wasn't his baby, but I get what the OP is saying. Baby had just witnessed one of the most horrible consequences of unprotected sex, yet that very night she sleeps with Johnny. As much as I like this movie that part always rubbed me the wrong way.

shareRobbie refused to aknowledge what he did. Johnny stepped up to support Penny's decision even though he had no obligation to. That's how you determine the men from the boys.
We can only assume Baby used protection, since those scenes were very limited.
Perfect opportunity wasted for a PSA (Public Service Announcement) and Product Placement at the same time: Show Johnny reaching into his box of Trojan-brand condoms.

LOL. I don't doubt that if this movie was made today, that's exactly what would have happened.
All kidding aside, it would be clumsy film making if Johnny was shown reaching into his night stand.

I'll admit I always thought it was odd that innocent Baby, right after seeing Penny almost die from the back-alley abortion, not to mention the setup which included Penny being horrified at being pregnant to begin with, didn't seem to give any of those real-world problems a thought when hopping into bed with him. And as mentioned, maybe birth control was used, but on one hand we see "this is what a problem pregnancy is like, kiddos!" storyline, on the other we see romantic sex with no outward explanation of whether it was safe or not, and no physical fallout resulting. So it went from realistic to fairy tale, kind of two movies in one.
All it would have required to fix that is Baby being more tentative than she seemed, and one line from Johnny like, "Don't worry, I'm not Robbie and I won't let that same thing happen."
Problem solved!
I once thought it odd, too, but then I realized that there wouldn't have been as much conflict between Johnny and Dr. Houseman if he and Baby didn't sleep together.

I think their was a moment in the 'Cry to Me' scene where you see Johnny hesitating...like he knew this probably wasn't the wisest thing to do, but then his feelings got the better of him.
Besides, Baby had something that poor Penny didn't have...a wealthy family.
Penny was the poor girl from the wrong side of the tracks that got knocked up by the rich boy. If news got out to her employers that she was pregnant out of wedlock she would have lost her job and probably ended up on the street, since she had no family to help her.
She needed her job to keep a roof over her head.
Baby still has her family, and let's say 'worst case scenario' she ends up pregnant by Johnny. Even if Johnny couldn't help her...her family would. Sure her father would be angry at her, but he wouldn't throw her out, they would step in and help her take care of the child.
So Baby had a security net that Penny didn't have.
Perhaps she used protection.
