Shen Chan - what happened?

The board lists Shen Chan 1940-1984. I've been looking all over to find out what happened and can only confirm that he died. Anybody know about this? The man was amazing in all his films. I respected his real skills and physical condition. I'm surprised to see he died just two years after this. Was he in the car with Alex Fu Sheng?
