was this film released in South Africa?

I'm curious if this film was ever shown in South African theaters in the years after apartheid ended?

Yes it was. Surprisingly, the following year. A lot of pressure was being brought to bear on South Africa and they were told by American Film distributors that if they didn't show it in its entirety, they could kiss goodbye to other films.

Actually the film was due to be released over the strong protests of the South African government but was set to release in 1988. Prints of the film were seized by police from 30 South African theaters on its opening day in July, 1988, and not been returned to the distributing company until April 27, 1990, nearly two years after its originally scheduled premiere. I was living as a white American in South Africa when this was released. To say it was controversial was an understatement. So many of the characters, subjects, even the song "Nkosi Sikelele" were banned outright by the South African government. It was hugely unpopular when released. The average white South African had absolutely no desire to see Steve Biko, who they considered a terrorist, a traitor, and was "banned" portrayed portrayed sympathetically. The film was released on a very limited basis, with screenings at odd hours. As a recent expatriate to the country I mmade a point of seeing it.....and was horrified to see the other side of the Apartheid machine.
