A truly great film

This is my all time favourite movie and having just watched it again tonight I had to state just how important movies like this are in showing the world the struggles of people and the fight to end apartheid.
It is incredibly moving and brilliantly acted.

I agree. It is a powerful, compelling and moving film. All the performances are outstanding, the whole film is beautifully shot, and while ambitious, it is a well meaning and truly wonderful film. Brilliant music as well.

I am lucky to have finally seen this movie recently on HDNet Movies. Excellent hi-def transfer! the picture and sound were spectacular.

this is a VERY underrated movie, masterfully directed by Richard Attenborough, who is also extremely underrated as a director (A Bridge Too Far, Ghandi, and Cry Freedom are all masterpieces of historical cinema genre).

Really glad other people enthuse about this film here. I have tried to get friends and family members to watch it over the years but the ones who have don't think it warrants another viewing and the ones that haven't think it looks boring.
I don't know really why it's one of my favourite films still. I do know that it's stuck with me for nearly 20 years. Maybe it's because I was impressionable when I first saw it; at college, ading a lot, lot more than I had done before, and taking an interest in world events and very aware of my socio-political environment and also around about the time Mandela was released.
It's the film that made me totally respect Denzel Washington as a great actor and Kevin Knline as more than just a great funny actor (only knew him from A Fish Called wanda at that point).
Attenborough is one of my favourite actors from yester-year from great films I loved watching with my dad like Brighton Rock, Seance On A Wet Afternoon, Great Escape and 10 Rillington Place. And I think Ghandi is a great film too.
I tell people about Cry Freedom and they think it's dated or irrelevant now. Strangely the same people will highly regard films like Hotel Rwanda though, which is a great movie.
It should be getting much more praise. The Killing Fields seems to be remembered a lot more as a great movie. I highly rate that movie too.

I managed to watch this with my dad and he enjoyed it, but then he likes political movies like this.

I agree this is a great movie. I wasn't expecting something as good as what I got. I watched it just to see how George Fenton's score would work out in connection with pictures, but this was a wonderful surprise. I was captivated from the beginning to the end, I cried, I didn't want it to end, it was so beautiful to watch.

I cannot believe this movie is so unknown. I cannot believe it only received 3 Oscars! For me this was one of the best movies of 1987, worthy of several Oscars: Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, Cinematography, etc.

Its a good film but as Attenborough's earlier biopic of Ghandhi meant that it had a lot to live up to.

Its that man again!!

I think this surpassed Gandhi, which was too unfocused and ponderous because it tried to capture almost an entire life. This movie was focused on a small segment of the protagonists' lives and flows better, in my opinion.

LOL! Ghandi is a technically excellent about Ghandi's life and the events in India he influenced. Cry Freedom is a good film suffering from a lack of focus due to only half the film being about Biko and his influence in the struggle against apartheid. The other half (around 70 - 80 minutes) is about a well - intentioned news editor and his family getting the hell out of Dodge. This is by no definition a great film.🐭

Palestinian uprising is going on right now. This film reminds of the importance of fight against Israel. At least people of Gaza have qassam rockets to strike back. I hope they can do a difference.
