This looks an interesting film, will definitely be watching.

Just had a quick look at Comrades. The art direction is perfect and eeriely realistic unlike so much Holywood sawdust and glitter.

I'm watching it too. It's superb. If you agree, I suggest we all email Film4 and tell themn so - that way they may screen it a bit more often. [Perhaps even ch4 will get the message!!]

Watched this film last night, thought it was utterly superb, everything I'd hoped for. Now that Bill Douglas' 'Trilogy' has had a DVD release hopefully it won't be too long before this film gets the DVD release it deserves.

Damn, missed it. Is Film4 like other digital channels, in that it screens movies several times over a month or so?

I saw Comrades on the big screen about five years ago. I'd love to see it again. I've heard murmurings that it is being prepared for a DVD release following the success of the Bill Douglas Trilogy.

Make no mistake, this film is a masterpiece.

Gwailo -- can you expand a bit on the rumours you've heard? Where did they come from? Who seems to be pushing it? I'd certainly second the suggestion that we email channel 4 to say how much we enjoyed it and ask for it again.

In the meantime, I got a good recording from the showing last week, which I've tidied up by removing the ad breaks. Provided I can make a dub from the hard disk properly I'd be happy to make a copy for anyone who wants it. Email me at [email protected] (1 March update: offer withdrawn -- see my message two posts below.)

That's a very kind offer, Jonathan, but I've just had confirmation that Comrades is scheduled for a release on DVD and Blu-Ray in July. This from the BFI's DVD producer. I used to work at the Bill Douglas Centre museum and archive in Exeter, and still have close contacts - they're contributing to the disc, which will probably be a 2-disc set with documentaries. It's being overseen by the same people who did the Trilogy boxset, so this seems very promising indeed.

This sounds wonderful indeed. I guess the image quality will be great then considering it's being released on Blu-ray as well. I sincerely hope the image and audio will be restsored so the superb cinemathography and Henzes score will be allowed to shine.

That's fantastic Gwailo, wonderful news that probably a lot of us having been waiting years for. In light of that, I'm withdrawing my general offer to make copies, as it would be good to support the BFI's decision by making sure as many copies of the commercial release are sold as possible -- on top of which I've discovered that I recorded at too high a sampling rate, so it won't all fit on one disk! Apologies for any falsely raised expectations.

This is probably a bit late but it's on Film4 right now - no doubt to be repeated a couple more times if you've missed it again.

Watching it now on Film4.. Adverts are on.. Looks fantastic.

"That gentleman has placed a deposit on this meat.. No.. a monetary deposit hahaha!"

reply

Watching it myself now also - Ad break again.

Really shows the unjust harshness of Penal Exile to Australia.

I thought it was apt when at one point they gave the Orange Order a well-deserved derogatory jibe. Anyhow, back to the film! Ad's are over.

reply

I fell asleep about 2 hours in and missed the rest.. Hope its on again soon.. Bah.

Lie on a bed of nails next time.

Should be on again I would think, you know what Film4 is like.

On Film4 again tonight (September 1st)

I saw this at the Edinburgh Film Festival this year, it was interesting, though I found it difficult to sit through.
