Is it recommended?

Is the dvd worthing hiring to see this?. I remember from watching Film 87 and the show host Barry Norman commented about the negative backlash it received from Chinese-American and Italian-American organizations.

This is an amazing film and is definitely worth watching, especially if you're fortunate enough to find it. I had to watch it on youtube, but it was worth. All Ferrara films are controversial, so the negative impact is no surprise. This is my favorite re-telling of the Romeo and Juliette story.

I'm re-enjoying it every time I watch it - it is a cross between 'Bad Lieutenant' (no redemption, no hope) and 'King Of New York' (revenge and violence), mixed HEAVILY with 'The Year Of The Dragon' in look and sound (especially parts of the soundtrack.) Don't forget this has also borrowed several Asian- and Italian-American actors from 'Year Of The Dragon' and 'King Of New York,' especially a really young David Caruso.

You put those three films together, squeeze real hard and this will be the mashed-up result.

I love every mindlessly fun, mindlessly violent moment.

I enjoyed this movie. I suspect anything the Italian and Chinese organizations said was because there was an opportunity there to be exploited. Think about it, just how many movies are there that explore interracial relations between Italians and Chinese. Not many and if they kept quiet (the organizations), "China Girl" would have found an audience and other movies exploring the subject would have soon followed.

No, not really recommended as it´s one of Ferrara´s weakest with its uninteresting, predictable story, weak dialogue and a strangely trite, limp presentation of the racial conflict. Sure, it´s got some style (it´s a Ferrara flick after all) and a few effective moments, but the whole´s a rather unconvincing milking for pathos and a less-than-impressive rendering of the NY street gang cool. 5,5/10 - better than Driller Killer, but that ain´t saying much, is it?

I agree with Franz, worth seeing once for the 80`s feel, and cast, but predictable, and not enough character development to make us feel anything for them.
