Question about sex... (spoiler)

Did they agree not to have it as part of the experiment, or did Amanda herself insist not to have it?

I think it was more about the fact that she was repulsed by him. But they did have sex because at some point she talked about the risk of pregnancy.

When I'm gone I would like something to be named after me. A psychiatric disorder, for example.

It was just her. She had sex with him before they went to the island, but once she got the all expenses paid trip of a lifetime, she cut him off completely, much to his dismay.

There was no prior agreement - no doubt because Lucy wanted to get to that island so desperately that she even reluctantly married Gerald so they could get visas. But she was clearly repulsed by his lecherous manner.

There is a scene where Lucy and Gerald are lying on the rocks, fishing. Gerald becomes angry and reminds her that he didn't forget to wash and clean behind his ears. He was angry at her refusal to sleep with him and accused her of whoring her way onto that trip.

That said I don't pity Gerald. He deserved everything he got. Right from the start he declares himself about a decade younger than he was and was clearly after a floozy for a companion. He remarked as to what a relief it was to know that his blind date was Lucy and not "that woman over there" and that she was the first applicant to make him feel "that way". She used him too of course but ironically she was arguably the better islander and was keen for them to go it alone without regular checks from the publishers.

Gerald was hopeless and lazy. He failed to construct a decent shelter and most importantly he "forgot" to pack the iodine. You don't forget something as essential as meds when you are facing 12 months on a tropical island. I have the book and must read it again to see how it compares to the movie. I am merely speaking of the movie here.

I think she cared for him but not in a wifely way.
