Why was Reed so stunned to see it? Was that suppose to symbolize him that they are not in paradise and that the real world rules still apply.

And how did that bird die? Fell from the nest or flew into the branches and broke its neck?

I took it that he was using it as an excuse to not get on with any task, he was pretending to be transfixed by it more than he really was so he could sit around contemplating. That's what Lucy accused him of.
