I really miss Arcade games from the early 80's

Just watching the movie and I really miss the days of going with friends to play video games right around when atarai came out.. The movie just made me think of how great the 80's were.. Now everyone is a computer owner, nobody seems to play sports on the streets these days, the movies are all computer special affects.... ..I yearn for the days of Thundercats, Tranformers, GI Joe, Vultran, He-Man, etc.. Atari, nintendo, game boy.. Great bands like Guns n roses, and everything from the hair generation.. Motley crue, etc..

Yeah I miss those days too! I remember how the movies were done a lot better than what they are now. It seemed a little more care free back then and the movies showed a little more than what they do now a days.

I remember watching all of those cartoons when I was younger. Those days were fun too! I even remember playing a lot of Nintendo too! Yeah the music was great too to listen too. The 80's were great!

I am glad you agree with me about that. I even remember such classics that came out called Jocks and Preppies. I have not seen those movies in ages! Those sure were the days of fun.

Im getting the movie called Zapped in the mail soon. I havent seen this movie in ages.

Zapped is a classic guy! I remember staying up late watching that when my parents had HBO when I was a kid or starting to hit my teenage years. I have not seen that movie in ages either!

The last time I saw Zapped was 5 years ago out of Chicago there is a guy named Sven Ghoulie and they showed this classic. It was great to watch! Another thing that I was going to reply about and remember is wrestling!

WWF during the 80's had the old school wrestlers that you do not see wrestle anymore unless they come to make an appearance on WWE. I remember getting hooked on Saturday Night Main Event with the commentators Bobby The Brain Hennan and Gorilla Monsoon! Now those were the days!

I used to love wrestling when I was young. I had the british bulldog toys with the ring and everything. I also remember getting a Guns n Roses tape and getting in trouble with that cuz of the swearing. I loved USA Up All night watching Toxic Avenger and all those cheezy troma movies.

reply

I loved wrestling as a teenager and watched it up until last year after Chris Beniot killed his wife, son and himself down in Georgia. Those are the days I remember being a fan of Hulk Hogan, Strike Force with Tito Santana and Rick Martel, Demolition, and much more wrestlers including Rowdy Roddy Piper. Oh yeah Guns N Roses man was sweet to listen to!

Oh yeah including all of those cheesy movies that USA UP ALL NIGHT showed. I miss those days and seeing The Toxic Avenger.

I just placed a order a week ago for The Pink Chiquitas, Cavegirl, and Dr. Alien that I all watched on USA UP ALL NIGHT! I received on Wednesday already The Pink Chiquitas which stars Sylvester Stallones brother Frank Stallone.

Now I am waiting to show up in the mail is Cavegirl and Dr. Alien. Now those are some cult classic movies right there that you do not see aired on TV anymore at all like back in the day when they had Monster Vision, USA UP ALL NIGHT and all.

The 80's was more my sisters era and all I recall from it was playing Atari at my friends house. For me only times I got to play those large video games (as shown in movie) was at a bar or when I took my cousin to a Game Palace and played Ms. Pac Man and some Mike Tyson boxing game (think this may have been late 90's).

I totally forgot most movies from 80's featured a Game Room in it ~ another movie I recall is BTTF Part 2 where Marty went to the future and was in an 80's cafe that featured a shooting game...Classic!

What was great about the 80s it was the summit of fun as far as decades goes. Music was ususally fun and ubeat, clothing styles were a little louder and more colorful, movies were very light hearted and exhuberent. It was the decade of decadance so to speak. There was so much more socalizing going on back then, like another poster has said, much more outdoor sports in the summer, video arcades, camping, water parks, amusment parks all seemd to be more popular, more peopl went boating etc. Atari and Commador 64 games were simple and fun, you played them for an 1 or 2 and you went on doing other things. Thee internet has changed the way people socalize now and frankly I miss getting together with people. Alot of people playing games would rather sit at home alone and play online, I still would rather get together with a group of buddys and order Pizza Dude!

If you're not aware, the classic arcade scene is still very big, I just found out about it after watching the documentary:

King of Kong: A Fistful of quarters.

I highly recommend watching it if you haven't.

Then visit Twin Galaxies web site, and a whole new realm opens up.

Yeah, the 80's was the best, most mystical, energetic and 'shining' era I have ever lived through. Everything seemed to go from colorful joy to dark depression after that particular decade ended. The latter part of the 90's was already a really depressing experience in comparison.

But I want to correct some mistakes in your post.

"Just watching the movie and I really miss the days of going with friends to play video games right around when atarai came out.."

That's Atari, not "atarai". Please use capital letter in the beginning when you are typing a name, and especially a name that you seemingly respect.

But yeah, Enduro Racer is pretty cool - I just played it some time ago, and it's still just as fun as ever. Good games are timeless.

" The movie just made me think of how great the 80's were.."

You can really feel it from the music and general atmosphere in the movie - the movies have captured some of the 'shine' of the era, and it radiates through. If you are sensitive enough, you can feel the 80's "vibes" beaming from these movies.

" Now everyone is a computer owner,"

Hardly. Look at the world beyond the western, first-world area. You will see lots and lots of people that are not computer owners. Look at the older people even in the western world. Many don't even know how computers work, and those that have them, have obsolete ones that they don't ever really even use. And so on. So not everyone is a computer owner. But what's wrong with that? What's so cool about not having a computer? I had a computer in the 80's, and it was great! So what was your actual point about computers and their ownership? How is it worse that everyone is a computer owner? That's not the problem. There are other problems about mainstream's interest about computers, but that, specifically, isn't one of them. Why shouldn't everyone be a computer owner? It's only natural, and it's only a good thing. What computers have become instead of what they could have evolved into is another matter altogether..

" nobody seems to play sports on the streets these days,"

Sports on the streets? Isn't that a good thing? Sports do not belong to the streets! I mean, there are dedicated places for sports. Streets are meant for traffic, and the less it's used for sports, the safer it is for everyone. No more baseballs through the windows or basketballs or skateboards damaging property.

" the movies are all computer special affects...."

Nothing wrong with that, if it's done properly and with 'soul'. If an artist channels his finest self into it, the art format doesn't matter. It's the darkness/depression-aspect I talked about earlier that makes it all so repulsive. If 3D rendering tech and CPU power had been the same in the 80's as it is now, you probably wouldn't be saying that, because the "computer special effects" (you mean 3D rendering or some other type of computer graphics integration, right?) would be so beautiful, exciting, wonderfully done and 'radiating' that good 80's vibe that it would be just a pleasure to watch.

There are some good "computer graphics" movies, like The Incredibles and AntZ. But as with everything, the bad ones form the majority. That's capitalism for ya.. capital is more important than the quality of the art, let alone soul.

" ..I yearn for the days of Thundercats, Tranformers, GI Joe, Vultran, He-Man, etc.."

Well, you can still watch all of those - they are available. So why yearn, when you can watch?

" Atari, nintendo, game boy.."

You can still get and use those. What's stopping you? Stop yearning and start acquiring! But it won't make you happy.. My point is, that you can still play all Atari games, all Nintendo games and all Game Boy games (why did you only write "Atari" with a capital letter, but the others with a lowercase letter?). You can even buy the real equipment and hook it up and use it. Nothing has changed in that area.

To nitpick a bit - a Game Boy _IS_ a Nintendo system, and there's really no system called "nintendo" anyway.

Nintendo is the name of the corporation that manufactures game systems and games. The game system you probably meant to refer to is called "Nintendo Entertainment System", or "NES" - but it also has other names. In Japan, it is called "Famicom", which is short for "Family Computer".

"Great bands like Guns n roses, and everything from the hair generation.. Motley crue, etc.."

You got to be kidding. "The hair generation"? Is this an official title? Hrm.

As much as I despise your musical preferences, I want to remind you that you can still listen to the songs from those bands - nothing is stopping you. You seem to "yearn" for mostly things that you can still do. Lucky you, because you can thus satisfy your yearnings.

I, on the other hand, yearn for the actual ERA, the 'time', the 'feel', the 'atmosphere' of the 80's, and I can only have very tiny servings of those by watching movies made during that era.. and sometimes I am not in a sensitive enough mode so that I can't satisfy my hunger for the 80's.

No amount of listening to 80's music or watching the 80's movies is ever going to be even nearly the same thing .. as there were so many other aspects to the 80's, that I really miss a lot, but which most people do not even seem to realize were there - making it impossibly difficult to explain.

Lucky you - your list is pretty straightforward, and your yearnings easy to satisfy even in the modern times.

Jeez, really.

You then go on to bash the rest of it. You "90s'd" his post.

You must be a real delight at parties

You could go out as a 7 year old and not worry about anything? Til the late 80s and the 'there's a child molester on every corner' hysteria... you actually played sports instead of playing sports video games.

Remember the black hole around 85-86 when arcades nearly died out?
