When was the last time you saw a Hollywood movie

set in the year it was made, that was this clever?

I think they may have ceased making them.

reply

Yep, I agree.

reply

"Night Falls on Manhattan" comes to mind, but your point is well taken.

reply

It was set eight years before the year it was made. Either that, or the last scene was set in the future, in 1995. That doesn't change the point, though. There are few movies this clever any more, with dialogue that good.

reply

Agree with the OP!

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

reply

Starship Troopers and A Bug's Life come to my mind.

reply

You are suggesting that this is the single best movie of the last quarter century? That seems pretty far-fetched. It was OK, but not even the best film released in 1987 - that honor goes to "Hope and Glory".

reply

the Big Chill comes to mind, it's a classic film in its own time frame.

reply

ugh...hate this movie and Holly Hunter's character...re-watching it now to try to figure out why everyone loves this movie and don't understand...boring and awful characters

For one, this movie has some of the best writing ever done in American cinema. It's clever, funny and incredibly prescient.

reply

Why is everyone answering with old movies? I think the question meant a recent one.
