Did anyone feel that Albert Brooks acted a bit gay ...

...when he was around Holly Hunter?

reply

I agree. I thought he acted like a self-righteous azzhole to most people in this movie in one way or another. He was sold on the idea that he was a far superior newsman to Tom. He would get mad @ Jane for helping Tom & then make a big deal out of it.

reply

No mean gay as in he acted femaine around Jane when they were alone.

reply

I really thought he was her gay best friend. I was convinced!

"Are you sugessting that cocoanuts migrate?"

reply

Their relationship was like that except for the fact he wasn't really gay.

reply

No.

It's just a sign of the times. Everything nowadays is called "gay" if it doesn't fit a certain criteria.

Remember in the 70s when ALL MEN wore tight pants? Ha! If you do that today, you're "gay". I read a tabloid article yesterday about Jake Gylenhaal (sp) and his male friend going out for coffee together. Well of course the headline is that they're gay. Two young men can't even room together today (you know, share expenses?) without there being a question mark as to what their sexuality is.

I'm sure there are other examples I could give, but you get the message. It's entirely up to you whether you define these everyday actions as signs of homosexuality or not...

What it says is that some men are terrified of being labeled with what they see as a negative label, so to ward it off, they'll flexively slap anything that seems remotely less than sturdy straight masculinity with the "gay" label. It's silly and kind of sad--even if they don't mean "gay" as in "bad," it's still reductive to the wide spectrum of masculine/male behavior. This is one social advantage women have over men, they're allowed ro engage in a much wider display of behavior. Women can wear pants, can cut their hair short, can do "guy" things like ride motorcycles or play sports. In fact it's frequently an advantage to adopt those behaviors. Men are not allowed this same unquestioned freedom when it comes to engaging is conventionally feminine behaviors--if a man wears makeup or a dress, or knits or something, there are questions or even more direct pressure.

Tip--men are gay if they prefer to have s*x with other men. That's it.

No, he didn't act gay at all. ...I swear, a guy who is intelligent, sensitive, and considerate towards the woman he loves, and he's mistaken for being a homosexual. ...That is funny. No wonder so many guys are afraid to be nice to women.

Stuffic totally agree with you. Just some examples: you couldn't have the Odd Couple today w/o them being gay (esp Tony Randall and his love of opera!), and most certainly Murray from the Mary Tyler Moore show would have been gay.

To me, Aaron was just your basic nebbishy Jewish guy.

"To me, Aaron was just your basic nebbishy Jewish guy."

Omigosh! I swear I was just about to post this exact same thing. You took the words right out of my mouth. :) :)

"and most certainly Murray from the Mary Tyler Moore show would have been gay."

Interesting theory, except that Murray was always married. I'm not sure if he had kids, although I know he adopted at least one during the time on the show. Now, this in and of itself doesn't mean he was straight, but I disagree with your premise.

No, I don't think Albert Brooks character acted gay, but I think people who obsess about the sexuality of a movie character are reflecting their own sexual insecurities.

reply

Then you're kind of an idiot.

reply

No. He was neurotic and insecure. These are not generically "gay" qualities, except to some people who are themselves neurotic about other people's sexuality.

Of course, "neurotic" and "insecure" are also three-syllable words, and therefore missing from the vocabularies of a great many people today, who seem to have only about four single-syllable terms to describe other people's character traits, of which "gay" seems to be far and away the most common.

reply

I think Jane was a lesbian. She had that Jodie Foster lisp.

Well, I think Hunter acted like a dude and Brooks acted like he was a Homosexual. "Let's be BFF's and go shopping," instead of getting her drunk and partying down.
