2 guys attracted to a control freak?

Jane (HollyHunter) is attractive and good at her job, but one thing that the movie got wrong is that the 'controling' aspects of her personality did not spill over into her personal relationships.

I find this most difficult to believe. Jane's relationships with the two males in this movie did not show any of these control tendencies. In fact, she is not controling at all with them. Is that possible? Yes, but very unlikely.

There is a scene(s) where she is telling a cab driver how to do his job. This is true to a aspect of her personality. I find in the movie that her control personality in her lovers was downplayed to a point that it was not noticable at all.

Maybe she's just cool in her personal life and leaves work...at work?

Wow... you don't know people... there are many people like Jane, especially in the entertainment industry. There are many celebs who are loved by millions who don't feel that love for themselves. There are many who are strong at work, but weak when it comes to a social life.

Jane has confidence in her work, because she knows what she's doing... but in the social world, she sees herself as a basket case... and has no confidence in that area so she has no strength in her convictions there...

I know SO MANY PEOPLE like that... how can you not?

Being a control freak is attractive to some men (I think)

Monica is a control freak in Friends and she was never short of male attention

I think if the woman is sexy and funny and has a nice personality even though she suffers from this problem it'll make men think about her good points.

At least I hope so, I consider myself a control freak at times.

The scene where she is with Tom at the ball and decides she has to take off and he says something to the effect of "so you just decide and that's it. At least give me a minute to think about it" (paraphrasing) is a perfect example of her being a control freak with one of the guys.

reply

You beat me to it, but I'd also note that by that point in their relationship, she'd long since realized that she could control him — in fact, he invited it.

It follows, however illogically, that she wasn't with Aaron because she couldn't control him.

reply

You could say she's actively trying not to be. In the beginning she comes off as too aggressive to Tom and then calls Aaron telling him how she failed.

The writer (Brooks) would have given away the story if Hunter had carried through with her real personality...In real life no doubt it would have happened. Brooks wanted to make the movie sale-able so he went for the easy and untrue direction of the story.

reply

She was a TV producer you moron, being a "control freak" is in her job description. Not everyone is threatened by powerful women.
