Do you know what I think?

This badly needs to be re-released. But it should be marketed as a pre-Toy Story movie as many people who went on to join Pixar and had a big part in it did this first, sort-of like the movies Miyazaki and Takahata made before forming Studio Ghibli.

Watching this movie realising this, I see so much of Pixar unique storytelling in this film. I'm really surprised it hasn't got more attention. Am I alone on this?

I disagree. Not every old, classic movie needs to be remade. I'm tired of movie companies trying to steal a classic's thunder with remakes.

That's not always the reason (if it ever is) sometimes it can just be a fan of the older movie seeing if they can do their own version of it.

Not remade, re-released; like on Blu-Ray or in theaters. The last home media release was a DVD in 2003, with a rather lack-luster conversion according to some amazon reviews (like, my VHS copy sounds like it's of higher quality). I would be behind having a Blu-Ray release, or at least a better DVD.

I'm all for a re-release of this, since I found out that it didn't do that well in theaters. I will say though, I'm worried about how critics would react to it since it was incredibly dark for a "kid's movie".

I think they should try and re-release it whether it might succeed or fail. You can never be sure how it would be received but definitely try a good restoration and marketing. Possibly to us "old fogies" with it's nostalgia.
