Jon Lovitz Rules

I received The Brave Little Toaster on DVD as a Christmas present Sunday and watched it for the first time in over 22 years. I must have seen the movie before January 1994, otherwise I would have recognized that Radio has the same voice as Jay Sherman. Lovitz does great work as the radio

As a kid I neither loved nor loathed this movie. Re-watching it I still had that "it's okay" reaction. The film doesn't have really laugh-out-loud moments but it does have its fair share of chuckles. I wouldn't say any of the songs should have won the Song Oscar instead of "Time Of My Life" but they are good songs. My favorite song is "Cutting Edge": the one sequence in the film that removes any doubt that Brave Little Toaster is from the 80's.

I hated the nightmare sequence as a kid and even as an adult I'm amazed at how creepy the clown in the nightmare is. Re-watching the movie as an adult I appreciate the film's reasonable balance: the darker moments keep the movie from getting too cutesy and they really make you appreciate the happy ending.

One gripe I have with the DVD I have is that the DVD's only bonus feature is a documentary on Brave Little Toaster that's clearly a promotional film for the 1998 direct-to-video sequels. All the documentary says of the Original Brave Little Toaster is that the film came out in 1987, featured the voice talents of Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman and was acclaimed for its music. Otherwise they just use clips from the first movie to talk about the sequels. They really should have put this documentary on the DVDs for the sequels as it has little to do with the original Brave Little Toaster.
