Lacks the charm and wit of the Chinaski novels

Mickey Rourke was a great actor in the 1980s... but this was such a highly overstated and melodramatic performance. He looked like a retard with a back problem instead of a smooth talking, womanizing, drunk with a knack for good writing. The novels are so full of charm and wit and truth and hilarity and this film wasn't very funny or witty or honest at all. It was okay. I definitely expected more.

If this movie had been charming, I wouldnt have liked it.

Just because it takes place in LA doesnt mean it needs a hollywood plot.

Rourke's character is often considered one of the greatest movie alcoholics. My personal opinion is that it's Nicholas Cage's performance in Leaving Las Vegas. It's as realistic as possible while staying quite watchable too.
