Art is made to invoke emotions. This is one of my favorite films. If you were expecting it to be a rom-com, it's no wonder you were disappointed.
This film was made because Fred Fuchs and Francis Ford Coppola believed in Bukowski's screenwriting talent so they produced the film. The film pioneered indoor lighting techniques and is considered to be a cult classic. It is so beloved, you have to spend over $100 just to get a DVD copy of it.
It is a grim look at the bar culture, as well as keeping a glimmer of hope about Chinaski. If you've ever been to a seedy bar, you will meet the exact people in this film.
