I saw it on TV about 2 years ago. Someone I know told me a bit about it a few years earlier and it sounded like a good movie, and one night I was at home and looked up what movies were going to be on TV and Barfly was one of them, so I watched it and instantly loved it too. Not too long after that I brought the dvd, and have watched it a few times now.

Yeah, it was only about half an hour ago... I haven't drunk that much since then.

I saw this movie when I lived in West Berlin back in the days when the wall was still up.

Berlin being such a cosmopolitan city has many movies offered in either the original soundtrack, original soundtrack with German subtitles, French with German subtitles or sometimes just dubbed in German, etc. This movie was actually dubbed German and it was wonderful.

I saw it later in the original soundtrack, and it was better when it was in German.

I was surprised while watching it that Bukowski just lent himself to German so well his sense of humor his personality the irony that mannerisms everything seem so Berliner to me

I only just found out recently that he actually is a German and then in makes sense why the German version is much better

No, the first time I watched it I blacked out after some heavy drinking.

Now in reality, I wanted to watch some of Rourke's classics and, even though the story didn't appeal to me, I decided to give this film a try. I was never amazed by it, but I certainly appreciate it.

I actually watched this film for the first time about a few weeks ago. Somebody had recommended it on the Leaving Las Vegas (1995) message board, so I decided to purchase the Blu-ray (relatively cheap, BTW) to see what it was about.

I'm familiar with Charles Bukowski's work, and immediately knew who Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway was, so I decided to see it. Plus, it was made in 1987, and I absolutely love movies from the '80s.

My parents did watch it back in the '90s on VHS, but I wasn't interested at the time. I'm kinda glad I was able to view this on my HDTV. I had a better overall experience.

In my early 20’s as my wife and I and friends were all big Mickey Rourke fans. We were warned that he wasn’t in the Pope/Diner/Angel Heart mode and it was still jarring to see him in such a state. This was 1988 and he was a couple of years removed from the more “known” roles, but I still enjoyed it (even though I felt the need for a shower right after). We were all young back then , I even had a European poster for the movie hanging at a bar we had at our place, but I’m glad I eventually got sober. It’s a hard, uncompromising life and Mikey make it seem all too real.
