Why didn't she get rid of the little brat when she had the chance?

I never understood that.

She didn't get rid of Elizabeth because the director wanted us to
sit and watch guys like you who hate and despise children go through
your internal agonies.

I would have, but not to the southern hicks who had been lined up to take her. Remember, JC (Keaton) had planned to give it up for adoption, but after spending a few minutes with the old and old - fashioned, conservative, backward hicks who were planning to take the baby, she knew she could not in good conscience hand her little life over to those people. So, she decided to keep her.

You guys completely missed the most powerful part of the movie.

She grew attached to the baby when she got sick and she ordered her all those baby stuff from the store and went to FAQ Schwartz to get those toys.

Then when she gave her to the old lady, she began crying which meant the baby got attached to her too. That's way she couldn't even walk halfway down the hall.. She became a mother at that point.

Exactly!!! And also, things worked out better for her after she decided to keep Elizabeth. She started her business which became way more successful than she originally thought. She wouldn't have to work long hours and could spend more time with Elizabeth. So things worked out better for J.C. than before.

That cheerless couple was from Duluth. That ain't in the south, honey child! There are hicks in Minnesota too. So much for your prejudices about the south!

I suspect whoever came with the thought that Elizabeth is a brat is a troll. Why? She was an infant who when she cried did not know better. In fact all she says in the entire movie is "Mama," a brat is a kid who misbehaves because they think they can get exactly what they want. The point about the Watson's being from Minnesota NOT the South is correct. Not to mention living in a "Mobile Home" not wanting a girl, changing
her name to Fern ( a horrible name to begin with), and worst of all rejecting the idea of new toys and clothes ( Especially in a COLD Weather State like Minnesota). As far as Elizabeth is concerned she brought something to JC that she did not have which was unconditional love. With the exception of the Watson's the worst character in the movie was her former b/f Steven Buchner ( Harold Ramis) ( that even includes Ken Annenberg ( James Spader) who JC looked at when she said "The rat race can deal with one less rat." 🐹). The reason I dislike Peter so much is not only is he a pathetic example of a weak human being ( making JC chose between him and Elizabeth), but is a wuss. Imagine a guy going to bed wearing a green mask? That is strictly female "Day Spa" kind of stuff. From a guy's perspective, that would be like dating a woman who does not shave her arm pits. Total turnoff. I understand Fritz wanting her to choose between Elizabeth and the job, but he is her BOSS not her PARTNER ( a different relationship).

I'm not a massive fan of the kiddies by any stretch, but that little girl was adorable and the film did a good enough job of convincing me that JC actually managed to bond with her.

And given that, it would have been odd had she let the kid go - especially to that hideous couple who wanted to adopt her. That would be bordering on child abuse!
