What scares me more than Nazis is....

.....that at the time I am writing this 278 human beings rated this film a "1". My God, who are those people?

Now I've known for a long time that the ratings on IMDb are to be taken with a grain of salt - but this really does shock me.

It also shocks me that this movie is not among the top 250 films when (arguably) so many inferior films are.

Some people don't like foreign language movies or dislike movies about history. One or the two. Which is a bit tragic.

I don't know if iMDB has a top foreign language list, but this film should be in the top 10 on that list.

Probably americans who think of themselves as "filmgoers" because they like Saw, Garden State and The Matrix, but that were dragged to see this one by some friend who actually likes real cinema.

It troubles me not a mite that someone would rate this film as their top 10. Beautifully rendered. A soft directing touch. Heartbreaking accuracy. I'm right there with you.

reply

great touch, agree.

Yeah, we Americans, just so inferior, who would want to live here. Do us afavor, spread the word that all other countries have the real intellectuals, and that people should immigrate to those countries. We will somehow manage.

I'm an American who likes Saw AND Au Revoir Les Enfants.

Does that mean I'm supposed to rate this film a 5?

Please don't make generalizations about all Americans. While it is true there are far too many philistines in my country, there are also people like me who love foreign films, art, music and literature.

Au Revoir Les Enfants grabbed me immediately, and had me until the heartbreaking conclusion. I cannot fathom living in an occupied country during war, trying to maintain a semblance of normalcy--especially as a child. Just a brilliant work of art, in my opinion. I am so glad that I own it, and will watch it many times to come in the years ahead.

You think IMDB is bad, but you ain't seen nothing until you've been on lovefilm and perused the ratings of great films. It's egregious. People who rate films like this a 1, are cinephobes.

reply

Actually, the real reason that it is not in the top 250 is that it does not have enough votes. Placement in the top 250 is determined by an algorithm that combines number of votes, star rating, and rating from users who rate often.

what scares me the most was someone comparing this to Avatar and saying it is 100 times better.
three reasons I thought the comparison was absurd
a) this movie was based on a true story
b) avatar is an OVER-HYPED fantasy.
c) no one ever called for this comparison ..it;s not the same genre

Let me just clarify something for you that you don't seem to understand. The rating someone gives a movie is based on how THEY feel about the movie; how good THEY think it is. It has nothing to do with how you feel about it. It's their opinion and they have just as much right to express their opinion as you have to express yours.

Who are these people you ask? Well, clearly, they're people who did not enjoy the movie. You refer to 'inferior' movies so obviously there are movies you don't think much about. I'd be willing to guess, if you've seen them, you rated them very low too.

See how that works? If you like something, rate it high; if you don't, rate it low. It's very simple. The question I think you should be asking yourself is why you need the ratings to match or validate how you feel about the movie. Why are you the kind of person who needs others to agree with you?

It's ironic, you think it's such a great movie yet you say the fact some people gave the movie a one rating scares you more than Nazis. Making that statement shows you missed the point. The Nazis didn't just kill people they tried to wipe out certain groups of people from the face of the planet. Anyone they considered 'different' and with whom they disagreed had no right to exist. Who the hell are they to decide who gets to exist and who doesn't? Isn't that similar to what you're doing?

In my opinion what's scary is how easily we humans (some of us) can so easily do such horrible things to each other and/or sit idly by and let those things happen. Giving a low score to a movie you didn't like doesn't come close.

What in the goddamn hell are you blathering about? Did you seriously just equate the OP's disgust for people rating this movie a 1 with Nazis' racist hatred for and genocide of Jews? Where did the OP call for sending people to gas chambers for not liking this movie? And what's with the whole "free speech" crusade? "They have the RIGHT to express their opinions!!!1!!" Where did the OP say they didn't? And aren't you kind of a hypocrite for flipping your sh!t at the OP for expressing his opinion? If condemning others for their opinions makes one "similar to" a Nazi, then doesn't that apply to you for your sheer hostility to the OP over his opinion? See where this nonsense leads you?

I would guess that very few of the users who gave this film a "1" actually saw it.

Some of them are probably anti-Semites and Holocaust-deniers. Others are probably just small-minded people who either can't handle a movie with an actual story or just hate anything with subtitles. Some may even have given it a 1 just to bring its overall imdb rating down because they thought it was too high.

sigh, another one of these topics

EVERY SINGLE movie on IMDB has a bunch of 1 votes, most of these are not because they didn't like the movie (they probably have never seen them) but because they are trolls, they literally enjoy rating movies 1/10
