Avoid at all cost!

I just wanted to rest my head for a while to a slasher flick, instead I ended up scratching my head about why this movie failed so miserably at being such a simple thing as a slasher flick! How do you *beep* that up?

It's a cold movie, for the lack of a better word. There is no tension, the killings strike me as incredibly lame despite being graphic. There is no satisfactory build-up. The killer's "personality" feels unestablished. It's just a guy walking around in an owl-mask causing occasional gore. And by gore I mean an AX SWINGING (the missing Tom Savini trauma sequence goes here!) followed by HEAD ROLLING. Yawn!

Most slashers are no-brainers, but this one goes beyond. It's like one of those zero-budget exploitation flicks from the 70s where your're waiting for the pay-off but in the end nothing adds up!

I can only assume this is suppose to be some sort of parody on the slasher genre - thing is it doesen't become appearent until the last scene where Soavi basically seems to say "*beep* it, even I don't know where I'm going with this". This movie is unsatisfactory in every sense of the word!

No tension? No build up? What film did you watch? It's a group of people trapped in a creepy theater during a rainstorm with a masked killer. The sets are spooky and dark, and the atmosphere is top notch.

And again no tension? You clearly did not watch the entire last 3/4ths of the film where the heroine awakens to find herself alone amidst the theater without any clue where the killer is.

Well obviousely you're more sensitive than I am because I didn't find anything creepy! The disturbingly non-scary psycho escaping from the hospital is crafted in such a cheesy way you're wondering if you're not in fact watching a movie within a movie. Then the gore starts... and the gore scenes seem ridiciousely out-of-place, which is usually not the way I'm supposed to feel about bloodletting when watching a slasher, so it can only mean they didn't manage to convince me that I'm watching a slasher. The set-up lacks nerve, so does the whole film.

Actualy you're partially right, there was some tension there for about 30 seconds, I'm talking about the scene where she walks up to the shower...but by then the film was beyond salvation. And the ending really nailed the coffin.

Me and a bunch of my friends all thought this movie was quite creepy, which is unusual for us. It is, in my opinion, one of the only slasher movies in which the characters are actually REALISTIC and act in a PLAUSIBLE way. I mean, they almost always stay in group, and there's even a moment when they actually think "hey, we outnumber the killer, we could chase HIM instead of him chasing US!".

Personnally, this is why I think this is by far one of the best slashers I've ever seen, but that may be just me (and my friends). It's sad you didn't watch it the same way I did.

BTW, I agree the ending sucked.

reply

well, yeah, killer is masked but does it really add any suspense to the story?? i think the answer is a big NO. because we already know who he is from the beginning.

reply

It doesn't matter that you already know who the killer is. This film is all about where is he gonna pop out next or what is he gonna use to kill you! IMHO one of the very best slasher/ giallo hybrids ever!

I honestly did find this film boring, but clearly it has a large following so it shouldn't matter what I think. Now I'm not the modern gore hound type, and I do love horror films, but for some reason this one never sat with me. Mind you I own an old VHS, and it is probaby a heavily cut version, but I am not the type to hate or complain about a film simply because its cut, and I don't know if seeing it uncut will make it better or not. I've held on to the VHS, and have tried on numerous occasions to give it another go, but I just end up turning it off halfway through.

Great story, Wallace Sawyer.

Same with me, I love 80's B movies, and horror, but this movie is so dry, it's very hard to sit through and be entertained, it could be the poor acting, or no character development, but I think the dull sets are too blame.
