An emotional Anne after talking to Gil at the gazebo

I'm watching the movie again after a few years, a fan on the Sullivan board stated that Anne was crying at the station when she told Gil thank you for the card, and back at her room. I decided to pay more attention and was a little surprised I missed it years ago. Wow I knew she was surprised by Gil's announcement that he was engaged to Christine. Although it's understandable that it caught her off guard, she couldn't have thought Gil would wait forever. Although I can understand her regret. I think seeing her buddy made her a little homesick for Avonlea as well. Let's face it, the Pringles were making her life a living hell!

It took me a few views to catch on too.

I believe that this is the turning point as far as how Anne feels about Gil. The note was kind, but it was a combination of beginning to feel something for him and the realization that she had missed her chance with him. Gil always believed in her and accepted her as she was. She finally came to realize how precious it is to have someone in your life who gives you that gift: the freedom to be yourself.

She had a chance to marry Harris, and she almost accepted, but by that time, she knew that she would be living a lie; going against her feelings for Gil and what she now considered to be her "ideal" man.
