Something kinda unrealistic

If the family was supposed to live in Oak Park, then why is going into the city such a big deal? I know Chicago, and Oak Park is a close suburb.

reply

Because they went downtown to the 'scary' area of the city after dark

IMO it's not only the trip into the city, but the circumstances behind it and what happened once the journey began.

1. Chris did NOT have permission to take them into the city in the first place - they were only supposed to go for ice cream.

2. Soon into the trip, Chris realizes she's stuck on the side of the freeway with two unruly 15-year old boys, an 8-year old girl, a flat, no phone, no money and no license. Oops.

Yeah, that was the unrealistic part. The little girl climbing all over the side of a skyscraper was very realistic. Happens in Chicago every day.

I've lived in a suburb of chicago all my life but only been downtown about 15 times, most of which have been after my teenage years. So yeah, going downtown as a kid was defintelty a big deal.

I grew up in the suburbs north of NYC (Westchester County), and going into the city alone at 15/16 years old was definitely a big deal. I remember driving into Manhattan for the first time and how difficult it was...part of that was because I was a kid, and part of it was simply because people drive like absolute lunatics in the city.

I dunno if it was the same for Chicago, but going into NYC as a kid was a hell of a lot more dangerous than it is now.

reply

not just downtown. the BUS STATION!
