I bought one whilst travelling round Oz... good sound... it's actually a musical instrument
"Here's to swimmin' with bow legged women"
actually a bull roarer is an aboriginal telephone not a musical instrument they actaully teach us in school here in australia
shareThey aren't teaching you the complete story. The bullroarer, known by other names, was and is used as a musical instrument besides making communication over long distances possible.
It isn't only the Aborigines who use(d) these objects.
Here's what just one source has to say:
The bullroarer, rhombus or turndun is an ancient ritual musical instrument and a device historically used for communicating over greatly extended distances. It dates to the Paleolithic period, being found in Ukraine dating from 17,000 BC. Anthropologist Michael Boyd, a bullroarer expert, documents a number found in Europe, Asia, the Indian sub-continent, Africa, the Americas, and Australia.
In ancient Greece, it was a sacred instrument used in the Dionysian Mysteries and is still used in rituals worldwide.
Along with the didgeridoo, it was a prominent musical technology among the Australian Aborigines, used in ceremonies across the continent.
